What do you do if you want to shift from a traditional career to a creative one?

I heard a saying long time back, either fill in your heart or fill up your stomach. Seldom one can choose his passion as his profession and those are the blessed ones.

Transitioning from a traditional career to a creative one can be both exhilarating and daunting. I know this firsthand because I recently made the leap myself. Of course, the transition wasn't without its challenges. There were times of self-doubt, financial worry, and the odd setback. It is not always easy, but knowing that I am following my passions and living freely makes it all worthwhile. If you're considering making a similar shift, I'd recommend trusting your intuition, being patient with yourself, and not being afraid to take calculated chances. With work, dedication, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, you can make your creative dreams a reality.

Just stop doing what you are doing and start doing something different! Find an activity that excites you and make it a career. For instance you may be a good swimmer so how about becoming a swimming coach!

Networking for a creative person is an opportunity to see where the skills he or she has can be utilized in a new way. A creative person is always thinking about a new way to do something or something to be done in a new way. Networking gives you the opportunity to explore the applications of what you know in things you don’t know. That’s why you need to go and meet people and explore what could be done.

In my dotage, I intend to take up a project of building an art residency and thus networking will play a crucial role. From sponsors to faculty, word of mouth publicity to angel investors, all amounting to finding the perfect property, setting up a curriculum and attracting the right talent - all of it will depend on networking majorly.

Be wary of calculated risks as this probably means that you're over thinking rather than also trusting your intuition. Instead consider this: another way of defining embracing risk is 'Being playful and curious. Remaining open to possibilites and seeing what might happen if you try something different to what you're used to.' Understanding that creativity isn't just about an output, it's a thinking process allows you to approach these 'risks' without fear. Because, you know that you can use your creative thinking skills to draw on your experience, problem solve, and find another solution if things don't turn out as planned.

Eventually, your growth tangent is indeed the byproduct of the risks you take up. YES, that said, let’s first understand what risk really means. Risk isn’t something you do on a whim, something that you feel like and just take the plunge, nope, not that. Risks are calculated. Risk is when the probabilities of the possible outcomes are known (such as when tossing a coin or throwing a dice); uncertainty is where the randomness of outcomes cannot be expressed in terms of specific probabilities. And to be on the growth tangent, uncertainty must be avoided. Analysis of risk or risk management is essential and especially necessary when it comes to transitioning to a creative career path. So yes, go, take that leap and create your own journey

Embracing risks is essential for uniqueness. As a creative person you need to risk making mistakes and that will help you create better work. You need to risk not following the rules of your industry and then you innovate and bring something new to the industry or even potentially come up with a new industry of your own. Risk is always risky, how ironic is that. Risk is where creativity dances and gets the attention of all those who want but keep themselves is the safety zone. Embrace risk more in your early days and later in life you may start calculating your risks.

Be willing to take calculated risks and step outside of your comfort zone to pursue a creative career. Embracing uncertainty and accepting the possibility of failure are essential aspects of navigating a career transition. Be prepared to adapt, learn from setbacks, and persevere in pursuit of your creative goals.

Risk is an intrinsic part of creativity. When you live from creativity you learn to love uncertainty, because you know that you can always start and try again.

One thing to consider is that you are able to inject creativity into any career! Sometimes it is not the career that needs to change, but rather the mindset. Stay on top of new technology trends, be open to new ideas and thinking outside of the box, find allies and safe environments in your role to test new ideas, ensure your new creative solutions align to the business goals you are trying to achieve! If you want to, I believe you can inject creativity even into the most “traditional” careers. One of the best examples I’ve seen of this is when we took a typical, standard, email communication and turned it into a virtual escape room for teams to experience! I’ve never seen folks read a memo in more detail when they think there are hints!

Be open! This transition is something I’ve been going through in the past year. Speak to a lot of people and be receptive to different opportunities that come your way, they may surprise you :)

Committing to a creative career can be daunting since a lot of people believe creativity is easy and business executives regularly disregard its strategic value. Nevertheless, it’s always fulfilling, rewarding and impossibly demanding at times, making every success even more meaningful. Just make sure to be comfortable in your own skin, in your own mind, to make your uniqueness shine through your work. If you’re not sure about yourself, your work will reflect it. Embrace your own particular view of the world, put the hours in and take pride in your effort, engaging in projects you truly enjoy and enjoying the ones you engage in.

I’d ad knowing yourself better, perhaps through the aid of a Therapist. It will help gaining or straightening your emotional intelligence. One needs to always be able to see the big picture in times of constant challenges and changes, and be prepared to do what needs to be done. But never forget to put a graceful smile on the face, be thankful for every or any outcome and let it all flow.
