Everyone values a talented, skilled and independent employee. Establishing your place through your skills in the organisation is very important. Willing to take challenges and sailing through successfully will always be given the due raise. Personally I never ask or discuss raises, but I've never been disappointed looking at my appraisal or increment letter. There was one instance where I barely got the raise but I was convinced it's not worth being there.

Establish your credentials. Add value. Build perception. Have visibility. Know your worth. Build a strong case. Value generated should be many multiples of your cost. Similar to a stock which is underpriced having a low P/E ratio & good growth opportunities which everybody would like to buy. Timing is important. Choose an appropriate time to discuss your raise, such as during a performance review, after completing a successful project, or when the company is doing well financially. Approach the conversation with a positive attitude and maintain a professional demeanor. Accept the outcome gracefully

Clearly outline how you've delivered/overdelivered against your KPIs, as well as your contributions to softer metrics like impact on company culture, etc.

As a Sales Director for EMC I approached an executive over the sales engineers about a raise for a much deserving individual who was considering leaving. It’s not just about getting more money but explain what’s next. How it contributes to your growth, long term career plans with the company. S+B+I tells a clear story.

Be firm but not rude when having conversations with your manager and above regarding your comp. In most cases they too are doing their best with what the organization has given them. Being rude or uncooperative in these type of conversation never helps. What helps is giving them pointers about the value you have bought to help them have the same conversation on your behalf with their superiors.

As you are the most flexible person in the meeting, you have the ability to adapt your approach the greatest. What is so wrong with embracing set-backs with a thought of 'How can we solve this?' Remember, to consider, what beyond money and financial reward is there? What is your 'Easter Egg'? Time off, shorter working, working from home. There are many ways you can adapt to change.

Showing flexibility can be immensely beneficial. If a raise isn't feasible at the moment due to budget constraints or other reasons, be open to alternative forms of compensation. Track your impact on revenue, efficiency, and other metrics. 3. Take on a stretch project that adds clear value. 4. In a 1:1, discuss your career growth, how you can take on more responsibility, and share your tracked impact. Frame it as a drive to contribute more. 5. Open a collaborative discussion about earning a raise based on your record and goals. Focus on your value and initiative, not demands. Engage your manager as a partner in your success. Make it about your impact, not just your paycheck. This approach positions you positively and sets the stage for a well-deserved raise.

Don't just expect people to notice what you do. They'll take that level of performance for granted. Make sure the right people know when you've done something special, and keep your own records as well. Then it's easier to prove your value when asking for a raise.

Label chair #1 with your name, #2 with your decision maker's name and #3 with the Company name. Sit in each chair in turn and consider what value each position brings to the other two. Reflect on the feedback each would share with chair #1. Importantly, speak and think using "I" for each position, e.g. "I am the Company." In each position, reflect on the reasons as to the reason you are not worth the increase in salary. Think the very worst reasons. In your preparation, be sure to counter these objections as part of your initial conversation.
