Most of this are so caught up in the moment we fail to see what we are actually doing. 1. keep a document/diary with what every day has included (15 phone calls, 3 meetings, documents created - every little thing). I've already mentioned this but you should start the process, which is a conversation with your manager, about a year ahead of when you want to be promoted. That means if your goal is to get promoted by EOY you're already 1 quarter behind, but if you want to hit mid-year 2025 you're pretty much at the perfect point so get started!

Timing can be as crucial as performance. Monitor the company’s fiscal calendar, project timelines, and any forthcoming strategic changes. Two things are also important - 1) Are you a good advocate and 2) Who makes the decisions on promotions? If your answer to the first question is "no", get some good advocates. Without being able to advocate for yourself or having people who can advocate on your behalf, you'll just be hoping to be lucky enough for someone to see your skills and promote you. I'm not a fan of waiting for luck! Second, make sure your boss IS the decision maker. If they aren't, make sure to know who the decision makers are and that they know who YOU are. Visibility is such a critical part of gaining a promotion. It's sad but if you do something amazing and no one sees it, your colleague who does something mediocre, but seen by all will be getting that promo!

Making certain you’re keeping a success diary of your wins, contributions, leadership, etc. not only assists with advocating for yourself and reminding your sponsors and advocates of your accomplishments, but it also allows you to stay grounded in facts. Staying grounded in facts is major, because it gives you an opportunity to measure your truth vs the feedback and rationale behind being awarded a promotion or being denied one. You can then use the feedback and your truth to make a plan for a promotion at a later time, or make a decision that it’s time to move on to a job that aligns with the value you can add. I’m not saying pack up your ball and run home, but I am saying look around and make sure the game you’re playing makes sense.

As this is a way to get intellectual property for free, let’s have some fun. 1. Find your boss in a compromising position and take a picture. Blackmail is helpful 2. Interested in an affair? Go for it. Then go to HR. 3. Plant illegal substances in their office and call the cops. 4. Eavesdrop and use the info to secure a raise. In all seriousness, talk early and often and ask what you need to do within 6 months to secure the promotion. That’s supposed to work.

I will achieve the targets as set in my yearly performance plan and also exceed them, delivering beyond expectations. It's also important to ensure that there is a room for promotiom, clearly outlined in my progression plan, and to secure validation from HR and other parties involved.
