Use what you already know to learn more about things you don't know. Take notes, listen closely, and apply all critiques and suggestions.

From my experience, organic growth within one company can occur when: 1. You communicated with your direct manager about the goal. 2. A mentor who is already in a leadership position build your personal development plan. 3. Ideally, when you become officially the mini-me of the current lead, you should be a shadow of the lead with some routines. 4. On top of this, leadership training is something that is typically ignored: you do not want to end up in the position of being given a "lead" or other leadership role without having first been trained in what your new job is, how to do it, and what's expected of you. Leadership isn't just "previous job but in-charge" - and being thrown into it unprepared is a nightmare for everyone involved.

I'd like to share a story from very early in my career. I was working at a company and I was on the development team assigned to build a game for a game designer. I was critical of the game's design. My manager put me on the spot, "Oh yeah? What would you do differently?" This was a test to see if I had a solution to the problem I identified. I articulated my solution and outlined the plan. My manager listened and responded, "That is an excellent idea. I am going to see that you get this opportunity." The next thing I knew I was paired with an artist, and was directing the artist on the new asset needs for the game. We improved the game, and I raised my profile and I lead a game design change from development!
