Also local datacenter power outages are less of a worry- you put in diverse access and the cloud instances take care of the rest. And for services like media streaming - let the cloud provider worry about scale and flash crowds. Warn them and design for the expected load of course.

Each user kept local log files and just uploaded changes. So all is not lost if the core backups cannot be recovered

At a recent large international ski race, we had 15,000 spectators and 1200 skiers, coaches and volunteers. The event was in a park and we needed Wi-Fi and dedicated internet to support media and broadcasters. We used cloud based tools to provision and monitor wireless access points, and did a lot of field testing to determine coverage. On the weekend of the event, the cloud provisioning enabled us to make changes in real time. The performance tools/graphs let us see CPU, radio and link overloads and other issues, and no local tech visits were needed in secure and crowded areas. Remote experts could help us monitor and troubleshoot. We used a hardware vendor with free cloud tools, so after the race we were not locked into contracts.
