So even if you don’t have insight into a developer’s particular project ask them what games they are enjoying. Remember to be positive, approachable and genuine.

While there is nothing wrong with eventually asking for insight or knowledge about your work, you have to play the long game. If you lead with what you want from the relationship, you could annoy potential mentors and taint the relationship in a negative light. When you reach out start with a question or two. Ask them about their favorite games or how they got into the industry. Let the conversation take over and share your own experience, but wait a while before asking for something. Focus more on learning from the conversation itself and the insight they share with you. Eventually, you will get to a point where you feel comfortable broaching the discussion on portfolios or mentorship’s, but don’t rush it.

Direct messages are good but again not disturbing anyone or continuously teasing them with DM's is not a good idea rather join discord communities

I like the more direct messaging for keeping the conversation between just the group involved because it makes it easier to share information about the project without revealing to much publicly. Plus I'm personally more comfortable in a smaller group.

Join and be active on places like Artstation, 80 Level, and even Threads/X(formerly Twitter). Comment, critique and praise and get your name out there to be recognizable and memorable. When you being your job search or even attend events such as GDC, you’ll have a higher chance of being recognized.
