Be decisive and create a wish list when it comes to what you want your earning potential to be within the next few years. Create a plan that will outline the minimum earnings you would like to achieve over the next decade. This then needs to be broken up into suitable phases eg; - Year One; - Year Two - Five; - Year Five - Seven - Year Seven - Ten - Year Ten Plus Beside each of the time periods above, list the appropriate achievable OKRs (goals) while also adding one or two BHAGs - Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Determine the critical Vs audacious and make sure you review periodically to ensure all critical milestones are met.

While I wouldn't have ever imagined saying this, there is more to life than money. Company culture, work/life balance, and job satisfaction are three key considerations that can make a big difference. There might be certain circumstances where you're happy in your current role, but your company isn't in a position to offer you an increase in remuneration. That doesn't mean that there isn't still room to negotiate. Personally, for me, two important options I would discuss in lieu of an increase would be professional development and increased flexibility. With regards to professional development, having a budget is great but equally as important is having the time to include your studies within your normal working hours.

Look into the feasibility of starting your own digital marketing business. Whether this is via a consultancy role, a new agency, or a freelance role there are various ways to earn a living from a digital marketing career. I do not believe one can jump into such offerings and be successful without; in depth experience, a Ideep understanding of the current marketplace and most importantly, without a plan of action alongside a list of critical performance indicators and/or key performance indicators that will frame your strategic milestones in the first five years.

Feedback is like GPS for your career. It helps you course-correct and grow. Don't hesitate to ask for feedback from your peers, mentors, or even clients. It's all about continuous improvement, hon.

Indeed, seeking feedback is a crucial step in comprehensive negotiations within digital marketing. Understanding how your employer or potential employer perceives your performance, expectations, and requests is key. Inquiring about their metrics for success, values, and expectations provides valuable insights. This feedback loop not only aids in skill improvement and goal adjustment but also nurtures a positive relationship. Following up is equally important to confirm the details of the agreement, express gratitude, and reinforce your commitment, ensuring clarity and alignment between both parties as you move forward in your digital marketing career.

As with everything you look to become a subject matter expert on, or a leader within a certain industry or area eg. ‘Digital marketing’ it is imperative you seek continuous feedback in order to frame your offering accordingly. Between qualitative ame quantitative feedback methods, you can ensure you are delivering accordingly. Whether its focus groups, NPS surveys, and even just make sure you have a continuous feedback loop on ALL aspects of your servive offering, you will not find a better tool to improve your offering, whilst also ensuring you are left with a happy customer/client.

Plus, don't forget about perks and benefits! Sometimes, the sweet stuff like flexible hours, remote work options, or professional development opportunities can make all the difference. So, keep an eye out for those juicy extras.

This all starts with knowing your worth and then having a clear outcome in mind around what you want to achieve. Whatever it is, you need to be super clear as it's hard to work backwards to reverse engineer your goal if you don't know what it is in the first place. Think about where you are today and, ideally, where you'd like to be in future. Once you've done this, break down how much it's going to cost to achieve the things you want to bridge the gap. From there set a realistic timeframe of when you think this can all be achieved. Based on this work on the path of least resistance to getting there and link that up to your outcome. Is it equity in the business, or maybe it's a percentage of sales from all the campaigns you run.

Bonus Tip: Consider taking on a leadership role within your company or volunteering for a leadership position within a digital marketing association. This allows you to contribute to the industry and inspire others while honing your leadership skills. Consider volunteering your digital marketing skills to non-profit organizations or causes you care about. It's a fantastic way to give back while gaining valuable experience and building your network. Consider freelancing or starting your own consultancy. This allows you to choose projects that align with your interests and values, while offering greater control over your work and income.
