What has worked best in my experience is to set the highest level goal that is specific and measurable and work with your mentor to plan out the supporting steps that will help you get there. For example, perhaps your goal might be to become an "accounting manager within the next 5 years." Your mentor may suggest supporting goala like taking certain soft skills training, utilizing team organization tools like Asana, obtaining a CPA license or PMP certification, or requesting 1 or 2 direct reports to supervise within the next year.

It's important to have done some research online to know generally where you are headed in your career. For mentors, it is tough to advise on career paths that the mentor has not taken. They may be able to give an outsiders opinion, but will likely have to introduce you to someone who has done the career path that you want.
