In my experience, joining a Nursing Informatics committee is a great way to become familiar with informatics. Another common pathway to enhance one’s knowledge in Nursing Informatics is to become involved in professional nursing organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau. Sigma has an active community of nursing informaticists, some of whom are willing to mentor newer nurses with this IT passion. Most advance degree programs do have an informatics component (my doctoral program did). However, if you want to really learn, in my experience, it is best to join the informatics committee(s) to be involved in IT rollouts and IT educational initiatives.

The content is super beneficial to increasing the nurses knowledge of nursing and informatics. In my experience, board certification is incredibly important to validate your skill, knowledge, and competency of a domain or specialty. The requirements for being eligible to sit for a certification are equally important to evaluate. It is imperative ANCC evaluate and ensure that nurses have the proper eligibility to sit for the board exam. Meeting the eligibility requirements can really only be done if the person is given plenty of opportunity/work in that domain.Study!Study!Study!

It takes YEARS to build this skill. It would not be expected that somebody gain this level of experience overnight. Things you can do now to help increase the knowledge level would be to read books about data and learning as much as you can about how to interpret data. I encourage nurse clinicians and leaders to view their unit-level data dashboards and understand the trends of all patient care data sets. This encourages and empowers them to learn more about what they’re doing at the bedside and how it impacts a larger group.
