Remember in-person networking events before the pandemic, I was so used to watching people sayin "Hi I'm X from Y" and start their elevator pitch. But then there were a few skilled hunters who meticulously studied their targets before hand, understanding their target needs and the solutions their products offered. They'd swoop into conversations masterfully, skillfully turn the discussion to the target, getting them to talk about their business and needs. Then, with an air of nonchalance, they'd reveal their product as the perfect solution. The target, now hooked, was never pushed aggressively. Instead, they were drawn in by a sophisticated approach, it was like watching fine art unfold before my eyes.

In order to improve your networking skills as a leader, it’s essential to realize that there are opportunities in every scenario and situation. In a hallway at work on the way to the ladies restroom? Be friendly and say hello and build rapport. No pitches, no sales talk. See that person again? And again? Slowly build in that pitch. Repeat this with dozens of different people. It’s a numbers game. The security guard in the lobby on your way to the elevator at your office? Same thing. Strangers in the elevator? Go for it. How many sales have I made as a result of this? Approximately 3 out of 10 in a month.
