What do you do if you want to improve your communication with your boss?

There are few things that are very important when you communicate with anyone not just with your boss. Anyone around you deserves to have a good and effective communicator from the opposite side. Being a good and effective communicator is not about the others who surround you it is just for you, the others benefit from it and if they are smart enough they will learn from you. 1. Be a good listener. Listen to understand not to answer. 2. Ask questions and not any questions but open ended questions. 3. Listen again, listening is learning. We learn when we listen, we demonstrate knowledge when we listen to the answers given from our source of information not when we talk. Listening is learning. 4. Understand. Parafrase.

I have been in this situation where my boss didn't like me at all but by the time he got nice to me. 1. First and the foremost step is to give proper attention to their orders because if you do this then they will have a soft spot for you at some extent but if you don't do it then there is no guarantee that their communication with you will get better.

What you can do is, listen properly and be interactive with his/her thoughts. Ask questions and try to clarify all the areas that you have doubts. Active listening is very important

For instance, What do you think about the task prioritisation in the midst of our current workload? Any thoughts on the prioritisation that I have planned? 2. Ask closed ended questions when you want a concrete and specific answer. For instance, How often should I share the update with you? Daily/ Weekly? 3. Ask probing questions for clarification. For instance, Can you give more specific feedback? Is there anything that you have observed that I should be aware of? This will help you align better with your boss's thought process, reduce communication gaps and foster team productivity.

Let's hear it: - Always differentiate between clarification & confirmation. - Always use open-ended questions. -Show proactiveness & willingness to take ownership. - Avoid interrupting your boss while he is explaining something. If you practice this, it will surely have good results & bonding.

Encourage dialogue by asking questions that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no. Wait patiently for a response, even if there’s silence. Use body language to show active listening.

Some advice about updates: Every boss has a different level of interest and need. Every boss has a different communication style. It's important to get it right. If you don't, your boss is likely to blame you, not themselves for thinking you were "supposed to know." Be proactive (and probably impress your boss) Start your relationship by asking your boss: "When and how would you like to get updates from me?" Ask questions if the answers are vague or incomplete: -How often? -In writing, or in a conversation (or both)? -Do you what different levels/types of details at different times (e.g. weekly status in a call, written one page summary prior to their quarterly update to their own leadership).

"Seek to understand and then be understood," while being open and honest about your issues. Starting from a place of trying to understand your boss' positions gives you better understanding, as well as adds credibility to your position because you've had the benefit of considering your boss' point of view. Understanding, however, does not equal agreement, so you also should have a good self understanding of your own outer limits regarding compromise. Finally, spending some time thinking through the issues you want to discuss, focusing on specifically on the "why." Anyone can complain, but those interested in true resolution have a good understanding of the "why" behind their positions. It will add credibility to your position.

In an informal conversation, simply ask "When would be a good time to discuss XYZ in more detail?" Your boss will probably ask for a little more detail to help them decide when and how to have the conversation. DON'T try to give your entire update right then. Simply clarify if it's -- for example -- a challenge you want a thinking partner on, a crisis you want to alert them to, or achievement of a major milestone you think they'd like to share with their own leadership.

Schedule a time that works for both of you. Avoid interrupting them during critical tasks or when they seem stressed. Respect their schedule and make the most of the time you have.

Sometime boss having many problems to take care of, so if we have any issue that already told to , we need to follow up them to boss, maybe he/she forgot to give us the feedback

Most comments/ideas here are nonsense. It`s really simple, help your boss achieve their goals. Done. If you can do this, you`ll find the communication will improve overnight. Not only will your boss pay more attention to you, but they will give you more time as well.

One important thing is also to demonstrate proactiveness and share your thoughts even if it is a little contribution. Also, you need to learn how to use formal languages and act with respect in order to gain respect from both colleagues and your boss.

The best is… to study ?? your boss ???? I know it from personal experience as Senior Executive Assistant. Here is how: - follow the discrepancy between writing style of your manager and verbal communication - you will know, when and how ask him/her for more details: via chat ?? (because your boss is constantly in meetings) or via short phone call (because he/she is fast and prefers short alignments), - adjust your communication style to your boss’s style - by observation learn how to be similar to your boss, use the same words, - know everything what is important to your boss - may your boss’s challenges be yours, - know your boss’s customs - for example that it’s better to align something before 8:00 am as he/she starts day early.

Always take the initiative for your improvements. Don't wait for the employee review meeting necessarily. Learn and adopt the growth mindset where you look for improvements in your methods or any process you are a part of. This enables you to take the initiative to reach out to your leaders and discuss improvement areas. In this case, you could book a quick meeting with your boss (AT THE RIGHT TIME) and discuss how you could improve communication - shows you are open to criticism and are highly flexible being willing to adapt according to the team's needs.
