What do you do if you want to improve safety management in your industrial engineering workplace?

Risk assessment is part of worldclass manufacturing. One can evaluate or assess risk by creating a risk matrix with probability or risk, degree of harm and control as score. Based on this risk assessment either engineering control or training or PPE can be implemented. In my opinion, Assessing the risk would be the major step in whole of safety as most of the risks are overseen until there is a damage. Risk assessment should be a continously process and the workers should be trained periodically about the same.

Improving safety management in an industrial engineering workplace involves several key steps: Risk Assessment, Safety Policies and Procedures, Training and Education, Safety Equipment, Safety Culture, Regular Inspections and Audits, Incident Investigation and Analysis, Continuous Improvement. By integrating these strategies into your industrial engineering workplace, you can enhance safety management and create a safer working environment for all employees.

For safety Management, start having a system first, then work on the elements and expectations. Gather the Mid to Senior Mgmt to develop the action plan, this way you will engage, consult and get the leaders to own. Follow up closely, support, coach and monitor. Ensure you share the progress tieh senior Mgmt to make improvements. this way you cover top to bottom and bottom up.

Safety management in engineering workplace can be managed by the following means: 1. Conducting a risk assessment of all activities and reducing risk that can harm workers by implementing controls. 2. Providing engineering control on machines involve in engineering work. 3. Developing and implementing SOP & safe working instructions. 4. Providing awareness training, communication & feedback from workers. 5. Providing safe working conditions i.e. temperature, humidity, vibration & noise, etc. 6. Providing personal protective equipment. 7. Conducting self-inspection & internal audits and taking corrective & preventive actions for identified gaps. 8. Conducting management reviews for continual improvement in the management system.

I think this is the most important and first step that you need to do. If you don’t know your base line, all what do you do can be ethereal. Exists many ways to assess the risk, and you need to choice one that fits your needs. Keep in mind, type of risk, existing controls, level of exposure, level of probability, level of consequences, number of people exposed, among others. Whit this info you can establish the controls needed.

Housekeeping is a powerful tool that multiplies the final result in any of the control hierarchies, because it immediately shows what can be improved, a clean and orderly facility shows the level of culture.

Something I found it very important in all sites and must be strictly maintained is the supervision.. a qaulified person .. who has the knowledge and experience of the running job, adding to understanding and commitment to the safety measures... has to be in place on top of workers to follow up the safety measures and its adaptation while jib processing

Introduce engineering controls such as machine guards, ventilation systems, and ergonomic design to minimize exposure to hazards. Utilize technology to automate processes where possible, reducing the need for manual labor in high-risk areas. Regularly inspect and maintain equipment to ensure it remains in optimal working condition.

Monitoring and reviewing the pre implemented control or safety measure is just as important as implemented new safety measures. Once the controls are in place there should be another safety assessment to compare the risk score and to know if there is any more safety management is needed or not. The factory floor is rapidly evolving place in terms of product design and development methods. Where as some of the engineering controls may not be reviewed rather carried over from previous process.

It is therefore crucial that organisations not only collect ideas, but also implement effective mechanisms to implement and evaluate these ideas.

In industrial engineering, proactive safety management is crucial. I propose some key actions to achieve this: 1- Security by design: This mindset permit to integrate security into process design to anticipate risks. 2- Employee training: Train them and empower them to detect and manage risks. 3- Predictive analysis: Use software to anticipate and prevent incidents. 4- Management commitment: Actively involve management in security initiatives. 5- Sharing experiences: Exchange security practices within and outside the company. 6- Innovations in PPE: Adopt advanced protective equipment for increased safety. These measures could promote a workplace where safety is integrated into every aspect of the activity.

Safety Communication is mentioned here but I think they look similar but it is different from Safety Education/ Training. While both focuses on conveying information and raising awareness, but on the other end, Safety Education and Training involves teaching specific skills and knowledge. Safety Communication can be through various channels like posters, emails, or meetings, while education and training often involves structured programs or courses. In all, they are all good to create a safe working environment at work.
