What do you do if you want to impress interviewers with your risk modeling experience?

Before an interview, research the company, quantify your impact, and share success stories. During the interview, use appropriate risk modeling terminology, focus on business impact, demonstrate communication skills, and showcase problem-solving skills. Examples include developing a new risk model, implementing stress testing, improving credit risk model accuracy, communicating complex concepts to stakeholders, and proactively identifying model limitations. Discuss your knowledge of risk modeling techniques like Monte Carlo simulations and logistic regression.

We may think that coming to an interview is showing all your achievements in some subject, but in the early stage of someone′s professional life this might be the key in your mind. In fact, I usually interview people and do consider that the key for success is in a single strategy "MITS" means "Make It Simple", which means, showing the results, what was the main opportunity to mitigate some risk, showing a success case, and do not be afraid to show any failure in your path, the success is not only made of gold, but sometimes of making wrong decisions, then correct it for a better future. The very successful candidate must be the one who is going to help to be a team builder, not only ordering X, Y or Z but driven to team growth.

It’s essential to emphasize your understanding of risk models such as Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall, among others. However, it’s equally important to illustrate the practicality and usage of these models in a manner that’s as straightforward as possible.

Highlight specific projects where you built or applied models that identified and mitigated risks, quantifying the positive impact on the organization. Mention proficiency in relevant software and techniques, and emphasize your clear communication skills when presenting findings to stakeholders.

This is especially relevant in the context of fintech and regtech, where algorithms and data analytics significantly impact decision-making processes. When speaking to interviewers, emphasize how integrating ethical considerations has improved model reliability and fostered trust among stakeholders. Discuss any specific instances where your ethical approach to risk modeling led to positive outcomes. This discussion showcases technical skills and adaptability and positions you as a forward-thinking risk manager who recognizes the broader implications of your work in today's digitally driven, ethically conscious business environment.
