What do you do if you want to highlight your expertise in special education inclusion during an interview?

I am passionate about inclusion for students who learn differently. In my opinion there are three key components to enriching the inclusion experience. They are differentiating lessons and materials, planning for collaborative experiences among students and communicating with other educational professionals about ways they have supported inclusion in their educational settings.

To stand out in an interview, it is necessary to demonstrate that your ability to work with school inclusion goes beyond theory. You must be able to demonstrate how you can welcome the student and make them part of the class. Inclusive education involves not only pedagogical strategies for the student to understand the subjects, but also that he or she should feel involved in all actions that involve their time at school. It is essential that you are able to demonstrate empathy and a real desire to help your students become a participating part of all educational processes.

Work in a special education facility for 2-3 years in a number of roles but interact daily with the students and staff. Share how you collaborated with any related service providers (OT, PT, SLP, HI, VI). Most importantly, let your enthusiasm and passion for meeting the needs of ALL students shine through as you tell your story.

During the interview, I'll employ personal narratives to showcase my proficiency, recounting moments such as when I aided a student with disabilities in conquering challenges, like assisting a visually impaired student in navigating a science experiment successfully. Additionally, I'll share instances where I organized inclusive activities, like a cooperative art project where every student, regardless of ability, contributed creatively. These anecdotes not only illustrate my practical experience but also underscore my ability to foster inclusivity in educational settings effectively.

In my classroom, I've employed diverse strategies for inclusion. Differentiated instruction caters to varied learning styles and abilities, offering tailored support or alternative assignments. Assistive technologies like screen readers aid students with disabilities, enabling full participation. Cooperative learning fosters collaboration, bridging gaps through group projects and peer tutoring. These methods ensure every student feels valued and supported, reflecting my commitment to inclusive education and strategic planning prowess.

During an interview, showcase expertise in special education inclusion by highlighting tangible impacts on student learning and development. Discuss personalized accommodations, differentiated instruction, and collaboration with support staff to meet diverse needs effectively. Emphasize the ability to create inclusive environments where all students thrive academically and socially. As front line educators, we all have hands-on experience with special needs children. In collaborative planning, we discuss effective ways to improve our differentiation. Consequently, educators also attend parent conferences where they may have to refer a student to the RTI process. Because of your expertise, you are equipped with the tools to identify, accommodate, modify, and provide interventions for students with special needs. With inclusion, you co-teach; in your classes students are strategically placed in student pairs, small group, and preferential seating. So, don’t sell yourself short. During an interview, intentionally discuss some of these collaboration experiences to highlight your expertise within the inclusion setting.
