What helped me transition into product management is the effort I took to deepen my understanding of the problem space and the dynamics of the people who are affected by that particular problem. This is what differentiate a product manager from a Business/ Solution Consultant who will be thorough in the product offerings.

To start, it's essential to learn the domain and spend time understanding the market you're catering to. Additionally, becoming proficient in writing a comprehensive product requirements document is key. The rest of the skills will develop with experience. The primary question here is do you enjoy taking on various roles? This is precisely what a PM is tasked with during the lifecycle of a product. You are responsible for designing, building, and delivering the product. You may find yourself involved in research to determine product requirements. Later, you'll collaborate with engineering to ensure specifications align with the design. You'll also liaise with marketing and sales teams, to tailor product materials. In essence an evangelist.

I mean, for any promotion, we definitely need to prove ourselves in the form of skills or the way we handle our responsibilities. Developing strong communication skills is vital as you'll need to be good across various departments.

In my 7 years of experience, I've found these strategies crucial for gaining visibility and advancement: 1-Deliver Results: Consistently exceed expectations with quality, timely products. Highlight achievements and their impact. 2-Build Relationships: Collaborate cross-functionally, cultivating strong ties with stakeholders to lead and influence. 3-Communicate Effectively: Articulate vision, strategy, and progress clearly to senior management and stakeholders. Be proactive in updates, feedback, and addressing concerns. 4-Take Initiative: Identify and seize opportunities for innovation and improvement. 5-Continuous Learning: Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to your role.

"How can I mentor someone if I don't know everything yet?" - that was a thought in my head before I started to teach and mentor. Surprisingly enough you learn so much when you teach or mentor someone, it just gives you the next level of knowledge which is different from what you get from books or courses, and it stimulates you to learn even more. Moreover, it's more alive and tailored, which creates nice bonds and a personal touch. You're never fully ready for anything in this life, so just dare to try and this can appear the nicest thing that fulfills you.

It's very common for lower and mid-level PMs to focus on capabilities rather than competency. Capabilities are knowledge and skills - tools in your toolbox. Competencies are how you apply the knowledge and skills you already have - what you build with your tools and the scope and complexity of the problems you can solve. My advice is to worry much less about the size of your tool collection and go build new things with the tools you already have! By focusing on competencies, you'll build the right skills along the way.

Having depth of knowledge on the product will help a lot in being a good product manager and it will make you guide others, help others, communicate well, develop skills in improving product and on top of that, making you stand out with a lot of skills.
