The only way to start is to start. There are so many beginner friendly communities these days so joining those would be helpful and with the internet there is a plethora of resources out there for beginners! The hardest part is actually starting ??

I would strongly recommend going to a film school or major in film production or at least have some basic knowledge about the audio-video production. While you get plenty of practice via class projects and assignments, internships will help gain more practical knowledge. You can intern in different production houses to see how different teams work. Choose what you like and then focus on that aspect, hone your skills, and work, work, work.

Networking is the most important aspect of filmmaking but also of any business or industry. Relationships are built by shaking hands and looking eye to eye, so beyond the digital or virtual world, which is amazing as well, don’t get me wrong, as someone from Alaska or Siberia with an internet connection can be involved in the same circles as Hollywood these days! And even pitch and showcase their work on YouTube and other platforms. But the most important aspect if possible even in a local level is to meet face to face and eye to eye in a conference or meeting setting. The only thing bad about the virtual world is that the youth become isolated from their peers and miss out on the real world development process of networking with people.

Similar answer like I stated before. Look for opportunities to help on sets. Colleges are always looking for extras to help out especially if you want to try acting. Facebook and other social media platforms have groups for film making

If your passionate about it, talk about it! You never know who you will meet and what they have knowledge or expereince in. Movie making is team oriented and the more you practice your people skills, the more you will thrive. I was a shy and quiet girl growing up. I ended up becoming a cosmetologist. One of the most social kind of jobs you could find. I was extremely out of my element and it took years to break through that barrier of letting people see me, especially working infront of mirrors all day with the constant reminder of doubt. The way I overcame that was I make it about my client. Learn about them. Share things about myself that felt relevant and I made valuable connections including others involved in music and movies.

If you are completely new and or are just learning about it through books or film school or a city College, you still absolutely can get onto film sets as a production assistant, and you should. Do the best job you possibly can do. Follow the head production assistant’s lead. But never create dull moments, and if there are dull moments, ask what needs to be done or look and see what needs to be done and do it. Make sure you know the basics of what a PA does. If you have down time on your hands, don’t sit around. Take that time to look around pick up trash, ensure crew has water, be attentive to your surroundings. On a personal property that’s rented out to crews, make things look good for the homeowner. Take pics before and after.

Volunteer on sets! Most production sets will at least feed you! And maybe sometimes pay you. Go to school and take some production classes. The best way to learn is by actual doing it. Watch what others are doing and don't assume you already know how to do it. I've done all phases of production from set design, producing, directing, editing, sound production, casting, etc and they all have their own fun things to do that help out the entire production.

For me it's a trial and error type thing. Choose a topic you care about and get creative with it. If you don't care about the concept or message behind what you are creating, even if it's a goal of just making people laugh. You won't find success working on projects that just is not a part of you. I suggest exploring the audience of all types of movies and shows. You already know who you like the kind you gravitate you, but I feel it would make for a well rounded business person to understand the place for other types of genres. Explore lightly, but ultimately follow what you are guided to do. Remember why you want to do this and let that be the fuel.

Journal, blog, vlog. You can share this or keep it private. There's always something to learn when you reflect on projects or ideas. That can be for business or personal usage. Sometime I get my creative writing skills warmed up just by writing and reflecting on whatever it is that I may be struggling with or even proud of. Good luck everyone.

Simple answer get your hands on all that's on offer in the employment market in your area. For anything you want to explore in this industry, you need people. Make this happen and doors can open. Next to the knowledge you can acquire via reading, people contact is the key. Reflect on your experiences remains with you and is a very important tool. It will give conversation knowledge to share or to learn from. From this you will learn what you like or don't like about film production and you have grown, which could lead to a specialised interest. Hands on, working within the industry or part of the industry is the most valuable tool to explore where you want to go.
