Have a billing system in place to make invoicing clients easy. Make sure your contract specifies in advance if a project is based on a flat fee or an hourly rate (with an estimated number of hours expected for project completion). When working hourly, I bill in 15-minute increments. This serves several purposes: 1.) Since the smallest block of billable time I work in is 15 minutes, I have no need for fiddly to-the-minute time trackers. 2.) I keep client-specific “time sheets” and note start and stop times to the nearest quarter hour. a.) I send the client a copy of the time sheet with the relevant invoice. b.) I also note on each invoice the number of estimated hours and the running total of estimated hours remaining.
