EI matters but is especially difficult for Administrators. Many good/brilliant administratores lack EI as they chose not to interact with humans or to limit this. It could be huge mistake to change this or to encourage human interaction in some cases. It's better to have someone in the team that can act as bridge and understand both parties and provide EI.

Emotional Intelligence is like showering. - it's not *required* for your job but ignore it long enough and it will hamper your ability to work. Learning to understand your emotions and those of others leads to better communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork. This will make meetings easier, clarify why other people do what they do, and make you a valuable asset in any job.

If you make this choice and are not forced into this go ahead. If you feel uncomfortable it's OK but should become more comfortable over time. Not everybody is meant to follow this path, if you prefer your machines that is also OK. Choose what is your best fit and not what others tell you.

What you're good at is a known unknown - you're bound to be good at something but what is it? Here are a few ways to gather data so you can determine your strengths: ? Track your emotions: Keep a journal or use an app to regularly prompt you to identify emotions and situations that trigger them. ? Name your feelings: Go beyond "happy" or "sad" to pinpoint what you're really feeling. ? Reflect on behavior: Notice when and how your emotions influence your actions and how others react to you. ? Seek honest feedback: Ask trusted friends or colleagues how you come across in different situations. Then, take the best parts and celebrate them! As for the parts that didn't go well, celebrate them too - they're easy growth opportunities.

I'm going to focus on easily accessible courses (e.g. online, free, or cheap) to remove the barrier to entry: ? YouTube has tons of videos on how to improve Emotional Intelligence, and even some targeted towards whatever you care about most. Watch 1 video (not 12!) and implement it for a few days, then do another ? Coursera has free courses on this you can join from Michigan and Yale. LinkedIn has some as well ? Toasmasters is a cheap organization focused on public speaking but a big part of the training is attending meetings, providing useful feedback, and encouraging others. I highly recommend it for everyone. Plus, it makes public speaking more approachable for those of us who hate it.

This is going to sound obvious but... ask people around you for feedback at regular intervals. To make it easier on them, provide them with pre-written questions rather than a broad "how am I doing". Some good questions are: ? In that meeting, I noticed X reacted in Y way after I spoke. Can you help me figure out why that might be? ? I have been working on my communication, have our recent interactions felt different? If so, in a positive or negative way? I will check in with you again in a week to see if you noticed anything since our chat ? I don't know how you're feeling about topic Z and I'd like to understand better - can you share where you stand on this and why? It'll help me be more supportive and effective.
