Of course, no one can be an expert in everything, but obtaining a technical base is essential to make day-to-day work easier.

Even if that isn't of particular interest, the nuggets you pick up become added tools for you to use/frame stories to decision makers.

New trends, new threats and new technologies emerge every day, and we must follow this topic so that we can apply the best concepts in all the environments we work. Therefore, always be aware of forums, communities and webinars that explain current and future trends in the technology area.

In the realm of Information Security, stagnation is akin to regression. My commitment to lifelong learning has been the bedrock of my ability to stay ahead in this fast-paced field. Information Security really is everyones responsibility. Our work and daily lives are dominated by technology or at least heavily influenced and interacted with on a regular basis. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to work with others. Even if it is just enabling MFA or giving the indicators of a smshing attempt, it becomes more impactful that you helped make a person not be apart of the statistics of being a victim.

People who offer to help, or participate in complex activities are often tapped as the ones to get promoted. Put your hand up for everything, even if you don't know anything about it. Get seconded into another team, spend time outside your comfort zone, work with Finance and HR, learn other business skills outside of Info Sec. As this wholistic knowledge and experience doing many different things, tech and non-tech focused is what will give you a significant advantage over someone who is purely tech focused. Knowing how technical systems work is very important, but understanding what impact that system has on a business, or a process is often more important. Invest in your soft skills, and your general business knowledge to get ahead.

The future of information security is written from the inevitability of failure, in terms of adversaries (their intentions and capabilities) and in terms of threats. In this sense, the threat landscape demands overcoming an approach based on risk mitigation, to one of impact mitigation. Thus, it is necessary to establish a systemic perspective of risks that includes known, latent, focal and emerging risks, in order to advance prioritization and action actions that allow the organization not only to respond but also to anticipate before the attacker succeeds.
