Starting a PhD after many years working in the industry was not a light decision for me, and it was even harder to see it though (forget about evening, weekends, and reading for pleasure for a few years). But it was part of my career plan which has delivered the necessary sense of direction and motivation. What a trilling experience of discovery and challenge! But beyond new knowledge and skills, doing a PhD has enriched my network with fantastic new connections - fellow students with their diverse and rich experiences and viewpoints, professors, broader community... many of which has endured and became part of my social support system. Early in my career, I attended conferences and workshops to learn from the experts. Starting mid career, I became the expert and gave back to the field. By giving back, my expertise was sought out by others who had by word-of-mouth heard of my work. Being passionate about the work, and giving back to the field are ways to grow in your profession.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone see’s what you see. People offer “free” help all the time, most just want access to the experience and environment that a successful person has created. Start with how you can help and don’t be discouraged if you get a “no thank-you.” If you become valuable, things change quickly. What would have been free assistance can turn into paid work if you keep grinding.

Instead of solely focusing on personal gain, prioritize what you can offer others. Share your knowledge generously, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate connections within your network. I make personal target to learn something new alternate years and I keep in touch with coursemate either via LinkedIn or the group chat we agree to maintain . I made a point to remember every individual , their background, their profession and engage in regular chats.

Mirrors and results don’t lie. Look at the road you traveled to get to where you are in a “rear-view” fashion. It will tell you what you left and what may be on your right and left. It may tell you what dangers you escaped from too. But keep focusing on what is ahead. It’s been said that windshield is the biggest thing you can look through. Keep up the drive to success. You can do it, especially if you are looking for it on the road ahead.

This means bringing value but be careful because sometimes we can fall into a trap of thinking our worthiness to belong is dependent on what we can contribute. I find that when we allow ourselves to receive and be helped by others it helps to balance out this feeling that we are always giving no matter what.
