What do you do if you want to break into a Technical Support career with no experience?

Lots of my colleagues started with no or minimal IT knowledge and experience. Since Technical Support is 50% or more dealing with people, the rest is documentation and troubleshooting, the lack of technical knowledge is the least issue. But only if you are curious and eager to learn you'll succeed. You'll have to read and study the technology, and sometimes use labs, videos, books, or classes to expand your knowledge to make progress and combine the gained knowledge with the experience gathered during work. When you don't feel like being a junior you can start taking exams in your support field and expand your knowledge on fields bejond your specilization.

In my experience, starting a career in technical support without prior experience requires learning IT basics. I began by familiarizing myself with operating systems, hardware, and software applications. Understanding computer and network functionality is crucial for effective troubleshooting. Free online resources like tutorials proved invaluable. I also pursued certifications such as CompTIA A+ through community college courses and online classes. These certifications cover essential IT skills and provided a solid foundation for my technical support career.

This would be incredibly hard, though not impossible. It's an incredibly steep learning curve and probably steeper than you're envisaging after reading that. Know that your attitude needs to be that you need to be always learning and you're trying to close the gap on people with 20+ years of experiance in technical support and are still learning. I would suggest to find a great mentor in technical support (happy to answer DMs on this), be passionate and the hardest worker in the room and you can do it.

Today, the market is becoming increasingly demanding, and understanding this, we can see that there is no easy path. Start by seeking knowledge, there are many valuable and free resources on the internet. A good start is understanding how computer networks and protocols work, seek to understand hardware and also agile methodology. With this, never stop putting your learnings into practice, one way to gain experience in the subject is by practicing. Another important point is not to be afraid to apply for jobs, prepare yourself and demonstrate what you know and how you can contribute to the company with what you have already learned and always show your pleasure and desire to continue learning.
