What do you do if you want to boost your career as a Database Administrator through volunteering?

Helping out my fellow DBA's at work or online is the most favourite part of my job. One can offer Free training sessions either entry level or expert level trainings. Blogging and sharing knowledge. Can offer my skills and expertise to assist non-profit organisations and charities with database Administration.Answer queries and help people online through forums and discussions. Explore online platforms for volunteering. But be mindful of your time commitments and ensure that volunteering does not interfere with your professional or personal responsibilities.

I held a voluntary position as part of the Editorial board for the International Oracle Users Group from Feb 2002 until Nov 2011, first as an Associate Editor and later as the Executive Editor (the "Boss" if you will!) so I can speak from personal experience.... While I served to help share what I know and educate my fellow Oracle professionals, the amount of networking, deep friendships, credibility, leadership experience as well increase in technical acumen cannot be underestimated. I also used to write articles and present at Technical Conferences and continue to do so (just search for my name in YouTube along with keywords such as Oracle and Couchbase) - It was hard work, but it was all worth it!

Connecting People , share the experience and discuss the Issue for better understanding about requirements to work Proactively and easily. Always remember the Fundamentals and the Major problem/Issue always have simple solution if we work together in right direction.

I’ve always stated that your network is your net worth. Reach out to colleagues, friends and business associates and put yourself forward to help out. This helps you to learn new skills and ideas which help to compound greatly over time.

Volunteering with nonprofit organizations and charities has helped me gain valuable skills, including database management. I assist with data entry, maintenance, and optimization tasks and collaborate with other professionals. Volunteering for organizations focused on data security and privacy and mentoring aspiring database administrators benefit me as a data analyst. I also like to attend tech meetups and conferences for networking opportunities to stay updated.

Volunteer for projects that require database management or data analysis skills to practice and enhance your technical abilities. Seek out opportunities to work with different database platforms or tools to broaden your skill set. Take on challenging tasks or projects that push you out of your comfort zone and help you grow as a professional.

Should join the local and global community to participate valuable professional development for the growing society. Before mentoring it is very much important to educate ownself.

As an Executive Editor of the IOUG SELECT Journal (a volunteer position), I was fortunate to interact with many, many Oracle professionals during my 9 years in that board - I helped mentor new authors and helped them write and present themselves and the knowledge/experience they had. In the process, I myself gained valuable experience through the process of "Reverse Mentoring" - i.e. Mentoring is not a one-way conversation where only the mentee gains. The mentor also gains, and sometimes much more than the mentee! You can only experience it if you try it - Help someone else by sharing your knowledge and answer questions in ListServs and Tech communities and you will learn much more than you teach!

Mentoring is a wonderful way to share your knowledge and contribute to your field of work. You not only get to share your expertise to help others, but you also get a feeling that you helped others and made a positive impact on those around you. I am thankful for those who took time out of their day to help me and shared their experiences and wisdom.

Offer to mentor junior database administrators or students interested in the field to share your knowledge and expertise. Seek out mentorship opportunities for yourself by connecting with experienced professionals who can provide guidance and advice.

The typical role of a DBA (database administrator) involves multiple responsibilities, including reviewing and approving new database designs, regulating the rules of access to specific data, and monitoring the database’s security protocols. They also maintain everyday operations and oversee upgrades and patches. Well, share the knowledge with others, which will improve you more and more. Focus on the solution rather than the problem. Always keep a backup solution for unexpected issues/errors and impacts.

As a volunteer in a lead position, as I was in my 9-year stint at the IOUG SELECT Journal board, I learnt how to lead others, inspire the audience and manage the process of publishing a high value technical magazine. Many have asked me why I spend such time and when I look back, it is in that place where my leadership and project management capabilities were developed and honed. I gained as much as I gave, if not more!
