From my perspective the network is your lifeblood. Attend in meetups, roundtables, gatherings, circles, etc. to get to know people and position yourself. If they like you they will recommend you to their colleagues and the chance is high that you soon have a solid network to rely on.

The most important thing a consultant must do is provide value. Consultants are often expensive and with less environmental expertise than the employees they are advising, we can be met with resistance right from the start. Demonstrating your value right away with some quick wins will help to create a more collaborative environment.

Use a laddering approach. No one wants to be the first one on the dance floor, fortunately there are those who will be willing to give you a shot without a huge amount of social proof. Use early opportunities to practice, set rates, capture data and feedback around pain points, and testimonials. Eventually you'll build a portfolio that you can showcase and demand rates to match your experience and expertise with larger and larger clients. It's unrealistic to approach the work from a perspective of hitting a home run your first time at bat and even if you do, it's really difficult to duplicate that success without a solid track record.
