In my experience there is also the kudos element involved, meaning that many an aspiring singer ( especially younger inexperienced ones ) want to know, hear, see what you’ve done and who you’ve done it with before they consider using your services . Even if you haven’t performed live, they will still want to know who you’ve sang with, for and where. when this took place. It wasn’t nearly as important in earlier times but seems to be more of a pull post Millennium. Just something to consider.

If you are an artist as well as a vocal coach then it’s so much easier to engage with and establish a bigger clientele base. Just through advertising your music and your services at the same time and using your own material in your workshop is also a great way of giving your clients confidence in your ability to coach them.

I would also say that a good sense of humour and an ability to quickly reference particular aspects of your craft and relay it to your clients is a must. If someone were to ask a question pertaining to a particular artists style they should be able to quickly access that subject and be able to translate vocally that to the client.

The ability to use new practices and skills used by others is a must too as there are lots of new techniques and innovations to be learned. As new technologies progress so do different vocal techniques and styles. RnB is melding in to Country musics realms a la Beyoncé. Rock and Rap/ Hip Hop have been brothers / sisters for a while. EDM is cross pollinating with many other genres so it’s important to be able to tap in to those styles and maybe open up clients who are a little bit closed to other genres and add more strings to their bow.
