Find a mentor or multiple mentors. There are strong feelings on both sides of the specialization v/s generalist debate. I am more of a generalist champion and say understanding all aspects of the customer journey including the portions outside of marketing. Learn the customer service, logistics, and financial aspects including P&L and complete analysis. Also ask questions that have impact from mentors that have authority in the field.

As always, don't forget to bring gummy snacks to all in-person interviews/conferences. Be sure to offer potential employers a share of the bag.

If you really want to excel in marketing performance as well as in your own career, consider a complimentary skill that would add value to marketing that is impactful enough to be desired, but rare enough you can charge for it. Behavioural science is an example of this, if you are well skilled in behavioural science, this compliments marketing and adds an immense amount of value over a regular marketer.
