Throughout this trajectory there are various phases and one has to understand each and every phase thoroughly. This is where you require a mentor who can guide you in each phase. Mentorship and support is a big plus when it comes to everything related to data as this field is quite fast and has lots of complexities.

Data Governance is a fantastic career path but it is tough. It is advisable to get a DG Manager/expert for mentorship who will help guide you, involve you projects, meetings and give a 360 view of requirements and challenges, and how to address and manage them. It is important that you visualise some kind of goal and see if you can commit to it as your mentor would want to see that commitment as DG is a very busy and demanding role, you would want to waste their time and yours. When I've mentored, make sure they understand to be committed but fluid, as there are lots of opportunities/career paths within DG as well, rather than an overall DG person. Though it is a tough role, it is extremely exciting and rewarding, a fantastic career path.

3 How to make the most of the mentorship

Once you have found a mentor who agrees to work with you, it is important to establish a mutual agreement and trust. You should discuss and align on your learning objectives, expectations, roles, responsibilities, boundaries, and communication preferences. Additionally, you should agree on how to measure and evaluate your progress and outcomes. When preparing for each mentoring session, set a regular schedule and agenda for your meetings. Furthermore, prepare questions, topics or issues that you want to discuss or learn from your mentor. Additionally, review any feedback or assignments given by your mentor and apply them to your work. During interactions with your mentor be proactive, curious and respectful. Initiate and follow up on conversations with your mentor. Ask for clarification, examples or resources when needed. First of all list out your objectives and chalk out a road map for yourself on how you want to move and gain knowledge in data governance. Then get your road map validated by your mentor. Once both mentor and you are on the same page then is the time to move on the journey. At this stage it will be easier to find what time and at what instant mental will be able to chip in when you are working along. Follow a proper trajectory with milestones and settle a time on a regular basis with your mentor. In this manner value add from the mentor is going to add a lot in your career.

A mentorship is not meant to last forever; it may end naturally when you achieve your learning objectives, when your mentor or you change roles or organizations, or when your mentor or you feel that the relationship has run its course. Before it ends, you should review and celebrate your achievements and outcomes. Once you become adept in the data governance to the level wherein you are not requiring frequent hand holding then is the time to end up the mentorship. You do not need to decide it in advance, however, you and the mentor will acknowledge it during the journey depending on how fast you have gained the required knowledge and how confident you are.

Don't dwell on your mentor for each and everything. Mentor is just a launchpad for you. You yourself need to look for various tools which help in the data governance and then seek advice of mentor on which one to use and how to use. Try to take control of your journey in the field of data governance, of course with the help of your mentor.
