2 Seek the resources

The second step is to seek the resources that can help you close the gaps and improve your use of technology in your leadership role. You can explore options such as online courses, webinars, podcasts, or blogs that offer professional development or training on technology topics relevant to your role. Additionally, technology tools, platforms, or applications can facilitate your leadership tasks, processes, or outcomes. Technology mentors, coaches, or peers can provide guidance, support, or feedback on your use of technology. You can also join technology networks, communities, or forums to exchange ideas, experiences, or best practices with other leaders. And finally, technology events, conferences, or workshops are great opportunities to learn from experts, innovators, or thought leaders in your field.

The third step is to implement changes that can enhance your use of technology in your leadership role. To do this, set SMART goals for your use of technology, such as being specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Additionally, create an action plan for your use of technology, detailing what, why, how, when, and who. Monitor and evaluate your use of technology by using indicators, metrics, or feedback. Don't forget to celebrate and share your use of technology by recognizing your achievements, learning from your failures, or showcasing your results. Finally, review and revise your use of technology by reflecting on your progress, identifying new gaps, or seeking new resources.

Consider change management approaches such as Kotter’s change model, identify the value and benefit of the change then create urgency, a guiding coalition, create and communicate the vision, remove obstacles, create short term wins, consolidate improvements and create the changes. Ensure you have a guiding coalition, steering group, or champions of change, to effectively implement change with the least disruption and resistance.

Embracing the culture of technology in higher education leadership requires adopting certain attitudes and behaviors, such as being curious and open-minded about new trends and opportunities, being flexible and adaptable to changing needs, being collaborative and inclusive with diverse stakeholders, being innovative and creative with new ideas, and being ethical and responsible with respecting the rights of others. Technology is not a one-size-fits-all solution for higher education leadership, but by following these steps it can be used to enhance your leadership role and make a positive difference.
