What do you do if a team member is underperforming and affecting the rest of the team?

I would address the issue promptly and privately. I will provide specific feedback on areas needing improvement and offer support or resources to help them meet expectations. Setting clear performance goals and timelines is crucial. If improvement isn't observed, I would initiate a performance improvement plan outlining consequences if targets aren't met. I would first try to converse with the team member and try to understand the reason for underperformance, and understand what is the strength and weakness of that person in terms of the work or project he is in. Once that is determined, will guide him/her towards his/her progress, be it providing proper training or allocating the task which he is proficient at or some other way.

Direct and transparent communication with my team member will be the most efficient approach such that I could understand what is the underlying root cause impacting his performance. I would vividly go through the Performance Review Metric history of my team member and analyze the measures he took to deal with past issues and the resolutions provided by him towards tackling the specific problems. The Performance Metric would in turn provide me a clear picture of the areas where he is actually lacking and needs improvement. So focusing on these highlighted areas would help him improve his performance and increase his motivation to contribute more towards the team. Communication, Collaboration and Coordination would help create an impact.

Identify real causes, I.e. demotivated or effect due to internal department politics or less salary, not appreciated at right time etc, then Line manager should conduct a private meeting and provide opportunity to speak openly. Address/fix issue. If he/need some training, should ask HR to arrange, get regular feedback, have dinner with all team members, encourage team work, if discrimination, than that should also be addressed.

Providing feedback is important, however, such employees are carrying an underlying grievance which was built over time and consist of several small personal/professional grievances which even they may not be able to pin point. Having a line manager who is more concerned about you and someone you can confide in is no less than an angel for such aggrieved employees. Team building workshops are amazing, however, it would be a hefty strain on the budget considering you want to address only 1 such team member. However, if you are going to have a workshop, then considering doing one for the Line Managers on Mentoring, building empathy and giving them care. Make sure that you have taken all necessary alternate actions to improve the situation and morale of the particular team member, and let the eventuality occur. The team is always above the individual, and this needs to be then clarified in writing. However, I have observed that such warnings generally don't help in most of the cases, instead they backfire and effect your employer branding. So, having conversations and let them enough time to phase out into a new opportunity within or outside the organization. Such re-assignments or separations help secure the employer branding.
