1 Know the risks

Ideally if you have chemicals at your workplace especially harmful ones you have a Health and Safety officer on site to report it to. In an office environment you would likely have to go to HR. Otherwise you start with your direct manager and go from there. If the exposure is causing any immediate distress like a chemical burn or respiratory issues you should dial 911.

Es importante recopilar la información de todos los productos químicos usados en el centro de trabajo. Todo producto químico debe de ir acompa?ado de la información sobre sus riesgos de uso y manipulación. Esta información viene definida en las Fichas de Datos de Seguridad (FDS). La normativa que regula el uso, manipulación, almacenamiento y etiquetado debe de ser conocida por todas las partes implicadas, desde el proveedor hasta el trabajador que use los productos químicos, pasando por transportista, operarios de almacén y empresas de recogida de residuos.

El las FDS vienen definifos tanto los riesgos como los EPIs que deben de utilizarse en la manipulación de los productos químicos. Habrá EPIs que puedan reutilizarse y otros que deberán ser desechados. Cualquier trapo o EPI desechado tras su uso, deberá de considerarse contaminado por el producto químico y ser tratado como residuo peligroso. Cada EPI está dise?ado para un tipo de riesgo. Se debe confirmar ante de su uso, que los EPIs cumplan con los requisitos mínimos establecidos en las FDS.

Cualquier derrame o fuga debe de ser notificado al servicio de prevención de la empresa. Ante el conocimiento de un derrame, lo primero es tener colocados los EPIs necesarios. El derrame debe de controlarse, ya sea anulando el derrame o fuga, o impidiendo que llegue a otras estancias o se filtre por alcantarillado o a través del terreno. Existen dispositivos de retención y absorción de derrames, pero es imprescindible tener conocimiento del producto químico para poder determinar cuales son los equipos de retención y absorción adecuados.

4 Recognize the symptoms

Dependiendo del producto químico, el contacto con él podrá ser peligroso por inhalación o por contacto directo. Pueden afectar a las vías respiratorias, al aparato digestivo por ingestión, o da?os directos por contacto con piel u otras partes del cuerpo. En función de su peligrosidad podrá manifestar síntomas de intoxicación respiratoria, digestiva, con vómitos y mareos, o reacciones alérgicas de piel o da?os por quemaduras en caso de ácidos y corrosivos.

Ante un accidente laboral con productos químicos, deberá de protegerse al trabajador afectado, avisar a los servicios de emergencias y tener información de las FDS puesto que serán de gran ayuda para que los servicios médicos puedan aplicar las medidas necesarias en función de los riesgos de cada producto químico.

I think first and foremost before you even get to the site, you need to familiarize yourself with the activities going on, the tasks at hand, and within those tasks you’re going to identify what chemicals and dangers are present. There could be many hidden dangers, unless you’re aware, and other proper controls in place any remediation that you could have no effect, and actually create a larger hazard .
