What are the inputs and outputs of your machine learning algorithm? What metrics and indicators are you using to measure accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness? And what are the risks and limitations of your machine learning algorithm? Answering these questions will ensure that your algorithm is aligned with your goal and values, as well as protect against potential failure, harm, or discrimination.

Data leakage (information leaks from the training set into the test set) is a common source of bias in medical machine learning: - In longitudinal studies, researchers follow the same group of patients over time, collecting data at multiple time points. If they split the data randomly into training and test sets, the same patient could appear in both sets, and leakage occurs. - In medical imaging studies, a patient could have multiple images or image slices. By splitting the data randomly, the images of a patient can be divided between the training and test sets.

In my experience, it's important to identify whether the issue is high bias or high variance in the model. To mitigate bias, consider using techniques like boosting, which focuses on building a strong learner from several weak learners. For reducing variance, bagging can be effective by averaging multiple predictions from different models to decrease variability without increasing bias.
