What do you do if a student plagiarizes and you need to give feedback?

Once found authentically,I will be meeting the student in person and ask the reason behind it. Even if the reason is reasonable I will be explaining the student politely about the consequences of it and the importance of being genuine and truthful in whatever work he/she does. I will also track the student personally and meet him/her often and see that it doesn't happen again.

If it's the student's first time, then you must immediately draw his/her attention to the illegality, unprofessionalism of the situation. This can be done privately or through a major comment. If the student is a persistent offender to this, then s/he should be penalized with either a major marks deduction or complete withdrawal of the paper for it to be reworked on. These measures will let the students know the depth of concern teachers place on academic work and also help them come out as quality graduates who will have a positive impact in their next journey after college.

It is not uncommon for younger students to plagiarise without intent, many times through a lack of proper citation. in these cases, I have often just given them a refresher lesson on proper citation and had them rework the paper to represent the correct method. In rare cases, students may attempt to plagiarise and pass work off as their own, in these cases disciplinary action will more than likely be the outcome.

There are two important points in here: the why and the how. It is really important to define base rules at the beginning of each session in order to avoid exactly this types of situations. In our institution, we have academic integrity officers. They are generally experienced academics that are also well versed with institutional policies. They also can provide an objective assessment of the condition. In addition, a student should know beforehand that their work will be compared with available resources (e.g., using turnitin) to assess evidence of plagiarism - this is generally a statement of dishonest practice that a student agrees to before submission. Additionally, the student should agree to this statement, so the institution can legally take action.

Its important to address this issue as it becomes a reglular practice of children if ignored. The child can be counselled privately and told the future impact of this practice. He/she can be given feedback that as he is original work of God. He needs to show originality to make a space for himself in this world rather than being carbon copy of someone.

It is important that the students and the teachers are familiar with the school's code of conduct. This is usually given out in the first weeks of the school year, and usually requires a student and/or parent signature to acknowledge that they have read the document and have understood it. It is important to take this code of conduct seriously and understand possible consequences for breaching it.

Before addressing the student, make sure that the work is indeed plagiarized. Use plagiarism detection software, like Turnitin or Copyscape, to confirm the plagiarism. Maintain a calm and professional demeanor when discussing the issue with the student. Avoid making accusations or becoming confrontational. Arrange a private meeting with the student to discuss the plagiarism. This conversation should be conducted in person or via a video call to ensure clarity and understanding. Show the student the evidence of plagiarism, such as the original source and the plagiarized sections. Explain why the work is considered plagiarized and provide specific examples.

Considering the intention prior to providing feedback is really crucial. In other words, it is highly important for a teacher to bear in mind that the feedback is intended to help and not to kill motivation in students. Thus, instead of perhaps trying to belittle the student, using a sandwich technique can contribute. So, maybe explaining how positive an original part is, proving feedback on the part which is considered plagerised, and again maybe a positive feedback on a corrct part. Then you would ask questions to make sure they have realised the problem and finally set a deadline for revision and submissin.

Communication is key. Being backed-up by company policy or pre-established agreements with students mean almost nothing if communicating about a case with them is not done properly. Of course. there are cases and cases, but as a thumb rule, this is not a situation that comes out often, so it is important to take the time to sit with each student and talk to them. From personal experience, two types of students rely the most on plagiarism: (very) busy students that are overwhelming with too much work and young students that still don't understand every aspect of academic life. Either way, it is important to highlight the impacts and consequences of doing that and try to show them this path is not ideal neither for now nor for their future

Generally, the lecturer, the academic integrity officer, and at least one student advocate (if student wants to) should also be present, alongside the student themselves. We generally refer student to the university code of conduct. We also advise that they can contact the Academic Skills Centre so they can get appropriate help to avoid plagiarism and be able to learn better and produce better academic work.

In addition to providing feedback to the student on what they have plagiarized, you also need to make them aware of the consequences. These could be rejection of the work (usually a failing grade is given), an investigation by the school board, suspension or expulsion from the school or class depending on severity, and in worst cases, legal action, if there are repeat offences. Students must be aware of these consequences, and that academic dishonesty will not get them anywhere. Plagiarism is dishonest, and will make it harder to do well. Yes, it will. Academic integrity must be taken seriously at all times.

A policy point is generally present that dictates the consequences. A student will probably get 0 in the assignment. This is declared to them before advising the admin.

There is serious impact on those students' creativity who plagiarise. Their creative ability decreases. Therefore, for the moment they might feel superior but deep inside their is knowledge deficiency in them.

Something good to know as well is that self-plagiarism is such a thing. That is when students use an old assignment to do their new assignment. Thus, they are taking the old assignment and acting as if they came up with the material then and there. Even having someone else do the work for you or in these days of AI counts as plagiarism. Students should not fall in these traps!

Follow up with the student to ensure they understand the seriousness of plagiarism and are taking steps to avoid it in the future. Offer ongoing support and guidance as needed. Remember, the goal of addressing plagiarism is not only to enforce academic integrity but also to educate and support students in developing their research and writing skills responsibly.

In the age of AI, it’s so important to become familiar with how to use AI in the classroom in an appropriate way and teach your students this as well! If they can use this great tool to help them (but not do the work for them), it could be a really great resource for students and teachers. We need to make sure teachers know how to teach digital citizenship to their students and can provide appropriate ways of utilizing digital tools.

As students are increasingly being informed about plagiarism, the consequences are also being emphasised. Students should be given adequate platforms to test their assignments for plagiarism and do necessary corrections. Students could also help each other to be advocates of anti plagiarism through their informal discussions.

I accept that plagiarism is not good for our skill and it avoids recognition for first writer. Therefore, identifying either the work is plagiarized and come on decision showing its badness is important.
