What do you do if patrons are constantly arguing over limited resources in the library?

Firstly I would invite them so that we can discuss what type of resources they are looking for so that I can identify the gap and upgrade our collection, and also some resources we can ask through interlibrary loan.

De-escalation is often part of the unwritten job description for library service staff members who interact with the public. Whether it's politely explaining policies or trying to lower tensions when two patrons are fighting over a book, these skills are instrumental in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. However, it's important that any conflict resolution efforts ensure the safety of staff and volunteers involved. In a library without security officers or in an area where police responses have been inconsistent, part of the way you empower yourself is to ensure that they maintain their safety and that of others by keeping them away from any escalating situation. Listening is important. Seeking a safe resolution is the goal.

Anyone who worked in public libraries in the late 1990s remembers the moment when reference librarians began to feel like reservation takers in a busy restaurant! Having a reservation system in place for popular items is nothing new. Libraries have done this for best sellers, videos, and other items that can be put on hold. The important thing is to develop policies which ensure that the reservation system you implement is fair and has conditions in place so a high-demand item does not sit on "hold" for a long period if a patron who made the request is not around to get the item. Reservation systems ensure that limited resources can be managed, and that managers can understand trends that need to be addressed in future budget cycles.

According to the law of the library, "There is a book for every reader." Understanding the needs of library patrons is a key factor in the collection development process at the library. Engaging the library patrons can ensure that only useful resources are acquired.

When patrons argue over limited resources, we often see this as a contentious problem. We may have a positive way to channel their frustration. If they are using your library's resources, they see value in them. Perhaps, they can channel some of their interests into advocacy on the library's behalf. If we are public employees, we must be careful about how we persuade others to channel their support of the library when they talk with policymakers. However, if these patrons engage in conversations with a library's Friends group or express their passionate support for the library to outside authorities, they can help you build the case for the resources your institution needs. See them not as antagonists in despair, but as allies who care!

Collaborating with other libraries is also a great alternative for providing additional resources for your library. Interlibrary loans among libraries should be considered. Libraries can share their catalogs and also help their patrons access the resources of other libraries.
