What do you do if patients give you feedback as a nurse?

In my experience, not all nurses know how to handle patient feedback. For example, a few months ago I was hospitalized for Septic Shock secondary to A-typical pneumonia. After a few days of IV antibiotics, I refused more Vancomycin. Many of the nurses said I needed to comply with the orders to improve, however I had to have 7 new IV starts within 24 hours due to infiltration, all my cultures had come back negative and I was on 2 other IV antibiotics. They weren’t supportive of me when the doctors rounded, but I was able to get the antibiotics reduced to one. I felt that it was a dis-service to me that they couldn’t or wouldn’t think outside the box and be more supportive.

An example of listening to patient feedback is acknowledging the patient feeling and emotion. The nurse needs to know when to call for help and how to properly de-escalate a patient who has heightened/aggressive emotions while providing feedback. The best thing to do is for nurses to properly educate themselves with crisis prevention intervention, and become skilled in de-escalation techniques.

I agree acknowledgment is absolutely necessary because all feelings are valid to the person who is feeling them. Therefore, it is appropriate to acknowledge the feeling, but it does not mean you agree with it. Nurses should ensure they use chain of command, security as needed, patient care experience officers, and de-escalation techniques.

Assim que o paciente expressar sua preocupa??o, é importante responder prontamente. N?o deixe o feedback sem resposta por muito tempo, pois isso pode aumentar a insatisfa??o do paciente. I agree! But at some point, you need to be ready to make the patient’s case. For example, when a patient has a high white count, but blood, urine and lung cultures come back negative on a patient diagnosed with septic shock due to A-typical pneumonia perhaps the patient is correct when stating that 3 strong broad spectrum antibodies are not needed given IV. Be ready with important information about how it appears to be affecting the patient in negative ways, such as causing the need for multiple IV starts due to causing the veins to infiltrate and also causing the patient to be nauseous. Most patients know their own bodies well, and if they think something is doing more harm than good, don’t be afraid to relay those feelings to the doctor

In my experience, the second that a patient sees professionalism slip is when they will start to lose trust. Nurses must remain professional at all times even in the face of adverse or negative patient feedback. This can be extremely difficult, but with proper education and communication techniques, it can be done.
