In my subject area (coastal engineering) we have the opportunities to use model in complementary roles, indeed the need to do so when the physics of small scale models do not reproduce some processes at scale - e.g. aeration in wave impacts, or transport of fine sediments. The key requirement is to be very honest with ourselves as to how processes scale, and how well they are represented in the physical model. Competition between models may well not be helpful, collaboration often is useful.

One of the challenge faced by experts is the lack sufficient representation of physical model into numerical model. The act of being able to represent and match the phenomenon of physical model into numerical model is always an advantage.

I agree, assessment on investment costs much be done considering training cost, requirements of new tools etc. And if the initial cost offsets this cost hence you can go on as it can also benefit you and your team on long-term basis.

Understanding and analyzing the numbers when it comes to doing C/B analysis definitely gives us a firm foundation to then make decisions. BUT key decision makers cannot underestimate the value of seeking the insight, perspective, and opinion of those who will be using the new technology. Often times decisions to implement tech changes occur without round circle conversations to make sure value is added in the correct places. Have productive and focused conversations with end users, have them open and often.

We must never forget to include retraining. We often find that training needs to be repeated. As people return to work from training, old habits may reappear, it takes repetition to ensure we eliminate the potential for complacency.
