In my experience, I find that there are two huge reasons people prefer to work from home: Cutting back on commute time opens up employees to move somewhere where they can actually afford a home. Instead of spending hours alone alone in a car traveling to and from work, they can spend it with their loved ones or on self care. Remote work is also a more inclusive option that allows employees with mental or physical disabilities to access tools they need at home or to provide caregiving support to aging parents or dependents. More studies on remote work are needed - I'm curious if remote work can help reduce some of the bias and structural inequalities that makes it difficult for women and underrepresented groups to move up the ladder.

It’s important to appreciate that when you change from an office environment to a home environment, you will likely go from a high-structured environment where structure has been created around you, to a low-structured environment where you need to create structure yourself. For both your employer and yourself to get the most out of remote working arrangements, I feel it’s really important to strategise how to create the types of structures around you that will help move the team forward. It’s good to have this appreciation going into a negotiation so everyone can prepare for the change.
