1 Identify the problem

The first step to solving any problem is to clearly define it and understand its root causes, effects, and implications. You can use tools such as the 5 Whys, the Fishbone Diagram, or the Problem Statement to help you analyze the problem and break it down into smaller and more manageable parts. By identifying the problem, you will also be able to set a clear goal and scope for your solution.

Recently I had a problem with drivers collecting assets, recording incorrect data, the most important task was to first engage all the stake holders and the end users to gain an understanding of the problem, once this was done it was identiied that driver did not have the time to manually count collected or delivered empty handling units in the busy periods of the days so meaningless numbers were entered, an operational problem. The next step was brainstorming viable solutions, but that was made much easier once the source problem was fully understood, we now have many options for the stake holders to choose from, the next few steps are delivery, but my advice is always to understand problems before thinking of solutions :)

Defying sometimes natural behaviour to jump into solution mode - and first spend time clearly defining the problem and aligning clear and understandable problem statement(s) with those working on solutions is time well spent.

2 Research and brainstorm

The next step is to gather relevant information and generate as many ideas as possible for your solution. You can use sources such as books, articles, podcasts, blogs, or online courses to learn more about the problem domain and the existing solutions or best practices. You can also use techniques such as mind mapping, SCAMPER, or the Six Thinking Hats to stimulate your creativity and explore different perspectives and possibilities.

Data tells a story - managing data/learnings and forming robust analysis is an important skill in problem and solution finding. Use of appropriate statistical analysis and design of experiment are essential for not only efficient testing but ensuring learnings are founded in data and not opinion. Correlation is not always causation.

I will bring all the challenges and scope to improve the product on the team members meeting on my level. Then I will advise, if we want to be an elite for product we need to bring some help from 3rd eyes. This 3rd eyes could be internal members or consultants. R&D members should not hesitate to ask help.
