The End in Mind! What are the generated outputs of the process? Now, look into the system itself and determine what the bottlenecks or barriers are within the system. I like to look at the statistical control of the process and then determine if there are defects that can be optimized. Thinking from a lens of managing variation takes us back to understanding what do we intend to get out of the system as it stands today. Management is responsible for optimizing a system, however, a system should not be changed due to processes that are within statistical control. This often leads to variation being incorrectly managed, creating challenges within the system that were never there. Understand special vs. common variation is key. Look up Deming.
