What do you do if you need to communicate with non-English speaking workers as a construction manager?

I once worked a project with Portuguese, Mandarin & English speaking workforce. A common disrespectful mistake, is to associate language differences with the level of intelligence. While translators were scares, visual aids remedied much of the communication. Fortunately engineering drawings are read & understood regardless of different languages. As a result I opted to photograph much of the works & created snag lists as a series of pictures laced with annotations of drawing & standard references, sometimes with cut-&-paste snippets to highlight the topic. It worked well.

During the interview or hiring process make sure the candidate knows your intent to rely on them as an interpreter. Some multi-lingual people may not feel comfortable in that role and may resent being used as an interpreter. With this understanding, the candidate may be able to determine if their particular dialect is applicable for your area. If they don't speak the dialect prevalent in your area, they may not be successful in clearly communicating with your non-English speaking workers.

You can have a quicker flow of understanding and resolving the doubts of the person by recording daily meetings a day in advance so you can add subtitles. You can also print the transcript of the video and translate it into the predominant languages in addition to English for a better gradual adaptation of the communications.

Respecting diversity also includes respecting boundaries. Non-English speaking workers almost always speak to their peers in their native language because it eliminates any potential miscommunication. However, this does not mean they are not wiling to learn or speak English to someone that doesn't speak their language. There is a time and place where speaking native languages is appropriate and encouraged. Respecting boundaries also includes not attempting to speak their language if you haven't already received their permission to do so. If you want to learn their language, let them know and get feedback. They may want you to speak to them in English so they learn how to listen and understand English.

Way back in 1977 I was at Cement Corporation of India's Cement Plant Construction at Rajban in Himachal Pradesh where my job was to erect the Pre heater. My Forman kinew only Malayalam and did not know a word of Hindi or English. To communicate with him I learnt Malayalam and we effectivey communicated complete the work on time.
