What do you do if you need to collaborate remotely on product innovation?

Slack, Miro, and Zoom are my go to tools for virtual innovation activities. The tools however are just one part. A refined process and evaluation tools are paramount to be succesful.

However, above all fostering a culture of trust and transparency takes a long way in co-creating and executing ideas. Allow for more ideas to flow, and give the individuals their due credit.

ools are very important to keep the team aligned. During the pandemic and beyond, as we continued in a remote model in my last experience, we heavily relied on Miro to facilitate Discovery sessions, which was crucial for everyone to collaborate. Additionally, we stored important materials in shared folders so that everyone could access them: the OKRs for the release, the roadmap agreed upon with the team, etc. Furthermore, we maintained all business and technical documentation about our product's advancements and innovations in Confluence.

Clear goals are the roadmap for remote collaboration! Define what success looks like for your innovation project, including specific goals and steps. A shared vision keeps everyone aligned and focused, while regular check-ins ensure progress towards those goals.

We need to be constantly connected, sharing ideas, challenges, and those brilliant "aha moments" no matter the physical distance. Regular video calls, instant messaging – these are our virtual war rooms! The key is to foster an open and transparent environment where everyone feels comfortable chiming in. Absolutely! Open communication is the heartbeat of remote teams. Frequent updates, clear sharing of challenges and ideas (through meetings, chat, or email) build trust and fuel innovation. When everyone feels heard, the end product thrives.

Open communication works when opinions are genuinely taken into account. Having a diverse environment greatly fosters team innovation and is a business imperative. People feel a sense of belonging when their ideas are used to shape the final solution. It helps to have facilitators in some important ceremonies, or someone taking on this role, so we can conduct dialogues more fluidly and based on competencies rather than opinions.

The discipline to carve out time for networking in remote environments are critical to make it work. Have 1:1 ‘s even when there is not much to cover, it helps keep the line of communication open and also acts as a virtual water cooler.

Managing time effectively in remote collaboration can be challenging due to different time zones, distractions, and varying schedules. However, there are multiple ways to handle that. You can start with setting clear goals/expectations, prioritizing common tasks, sharing your calendar space, creating an established routine for group reviews. And last but not the least at all, time management will help you beat WLB stress as well!

Time zone difference can be leveraged instead of being a limiting factor. In my MIT course with members from different countries, we designed the project timeline and respective roles - "you do this when I sleep", so to speak. Even if roles are set in stone, as in a big global organization, creative project planning can still allow cross-functional tasks to be streamlined by mapping time-zone-specific deadlines. Early planning is critical, so is clear documentation and over-arching project management. The goal is to have members focus on their own time management and not the project time management.

Product Innovation can happen only in an environment where product members understand the outside inside view of the product against the competition market and existing trends. This can be assured by brainstorming sessions with teams in an open environment. Whiteboarding techniques, offsite papers to bring the team closer will bring in lots of innovation without any stress. Hybrid environment motivates whole day offsite/brainstorming from the respective places encouraging team bonding and innovations. This should not be over done. Carefully choosing the frequency as per the product needs is also equally important. This is where leadership plays a critical role

Feedback is important to understand how others have experienced you. But it's important to remember that it comes from the perspective of the other person, who has their own needs and emotions. Striking a balance between opinion and facts, guided by a common agreement between both parties on what should be right or the direction, can help balance these feedback sessions and make them lighter and more productive.

A feedback loop can significantly contribute to managing time effectively in remote collaboration by providing a structured way to assess performance, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments.

There are many forms of feedback. Post Mortem is a particularly useful tool. Conducted shortly after a project is wrapped up (or milestone met), the team met and discussed what could have been improved. It is an excellent tool because: 1/ Timeliness - learning is in-time when memories are still fresh. 2/ Non-threatening - Post Mortem is positioned as part of a project, instead of a "critique" session. 3/ Immediate application - Learning can be applied immediately to the next project or milestone. I highly recommend adding Post Mortem into any company's Feedback Toolbox.

Here are some additional considerations for remote collaboration on product innovation: 1. Schedule regular team check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and align with project goals. 2. Document all discussions, decisions, and action items for clarity and accountability in confluence or Trello. 3. Be flexible with meeting schedules and time zones to ensure participation. 4.Foster a creative environment for brain storming, idea sharing and experimentation by scheduling monthly hackathons. 5. Regularly celebrate the team achievements to support team morale. 6. Encourage continuous learning through monthly virtual learning sessions to stay updated with industry trends and technologies.
