What do you do if you need to choose between a relational and non-relational database?

Firstly, we have to figure out what kind of data we are going to be dealing with. In my experience, many projects go for the short cut and choose non relational database to avoid the effort needed to do data modelling. Most of the use cases would surely fit relational databases. We have to be on the lookout if the use case is the best fit or not. Even if we receive, unstructured data, with proper understanding, planning and modelling, we can surely channel an unstructured data into relational database and only if there is no other way, we should explore the non-relational ones.

I hate the term "unstructured data" as it's just wrong. No data is every really totally unstructured. If it was then the system would spend all it's time just trying to determine what was where. Flat data vs richly structured data is in my opinion more accurate. And lots of DB support full ACID transactions including non-RDBMS ones like MongoDB (disclaimer I do work for MongoDB). What's key is what structure do you need the data in to optimize for your use case. Is the ideal structure very flat with few joins? Is all of the data fairly independent? Then an RDBMS might be perfect. But for richly structured data, other solutions might significantly outperform an RDBMS and can still give you the same ACID features + others.

A team of mine migrated a RDBMS product to Mongo several years ago to great success. The RDBMS offering required 20+ tables to handle the data structures and the complexity of the query across those was killing performance. Moving to a document style db allowed for far simpler queries, 10x improvement in response time, and even replication to read-only nodes was significantly improved. It was a use case that was a great fit for a document style DB because each record (ads that were availble to display) could be essentially considered self contained. That same can be applied to orders, shipments, customers, etc...
