What do you do to keep your marine equipment in top shape?

I am not an engineer but speaking as a Mariner. PROPER maintenance is very important, and never forget to do "routine checks". You might overlooked them and sometimes a small pin is missing on the fire extinguishers but because of routine checks you rectified it before the next scheduled maintenance!

Our company invests in condition monitoring on our vessels, even initiated a CM CLass notation and it pays divideds saving millions in the long run across a fleet. Having a robust, and common, Fleet PM regime and sticking to it, monitoring performance in the office (Power Bi reports) and regular discussions with crew, following OEM manuals for M&R and OPERATION! Good oil, oil,grease and vibration analysis. Ensure Management / OPS Dept give sufficient time to the vessel managers for timely M&R.

As cruise vessel Chief Engineer, I prioritize maintaining marine equipment in top condition through a combination of knowledge, strategic planning, and teamwork. Firstly, I ensure that both my team and I are well informed in the specific requirements of each equipment onboard. Secondly, we implement a proper planned maintenance system that schedules regular checks and servicing. Pro-active maintenance is the key. There is no room for the attitude “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Remember that in many cases manufacturers offers different yard sticks for service points. E.g. at 500 hours or 3 years. It doesn’t mean either it means whichever is least.

The best way to keep the ship’s equipment clean would be to strictly follow the cleaning / lubricating schedule as recommended by the OEM . Any shortcuts or home made recipes are surely a path to disaster .

I agree with the idea of upgrading your equipment regularly. However permissions from the company must be sought first and always keep records of any changes made during the process. And educate yourself and the team on what the upgrades will be about. Don’t limit the crew knowledge it’s good to make everyone aware and familiar. If it’s a fleet wide upgrade then a circular should be sent out to every vessel. And if it has to be amended in the company SMS then it will help greatly and also if the upgrade requires that further training should compliment the team. Then the company will have to organize for the next rotation of crew members has the opportunity to follow those training.
