What do you do if information security deadlines are causing you to feel overwhelmed?

In my opinion, prioritization is the most important activity one can do proactively to avoid being overwhelmed. There is no dirth of work for an information security professional - be it strategic, planned activities or unplanned fire fighting ones like new threats, vulns or anything urgent. The time and effort spent on prioritization on a regular basis or having a standing agreement on priorities with your supervisor or organization can go a long way in avoiding burn outs or feeling overwhelmed. As a corollary, it is also important that effort goes into activities that are a higher priority and value to you, your org and your company. Working on low priority and low value tasks is taking time away from the higher priority ones.

Start by clearly defining the WHY: what are your company's pain points? Develop a vision and a realistic execution strategy, and then gain support from all levels of the organization to ensure everyone stays aligned. Lack of alignment will cause delays and frustration, leading to unnecessary anxiety. Use clear metrics to track progress, and be on the lookout for risks and roadblocks. Approach tasks with a calm mind, but set clear expectations and empower people with autonomy and agency.
