What do you do if you haven't researched the gaming company before your interview?

This can happen if you are at a conference and there is a "open interview" window. Of course with a phone, you should be able to do some bear minimum research before time. Specifically you should know what projects that company has already put out. understand their catalog. From there you can tailor your answers to your experience in what they have made. If you they are a new company, ASK QUESTIONS. The interviewer should be willing to answer questions that will help point you to what they are looking for. When looking for jobs, you should not just look for openings, but good fits. Consider the interviewer an partner in discovering if the company is a good fit for you, and if you are a good fit for them.

At the very least, know your interviewer, the position, the general responsibilities and the company you are interviewing with. Be on your best self by portraying your confidence, when talking about your experience, link it to the job description you've previously glanced through. Being adaptable on the fly is a tricky situation but it will surprise interviewer if you managed to nail it. Because more than often there are many situations in real world settings that firefighting happen, and again you may be involved.

While I always recommend being prepared, if I need a quick download of a company before an interview, I always look at 3 things: The interviewer's LinkedIn and their posts, the company's LinkedIn and its posts, and the Twitter accounts of the company and its game brands. You can often glean some surface level insight into the latest developments of the company from these 3 things. For the Interviewer, maybe you have shared connections or a there's an overlap in company history that you can reference. For the Company, maybe there are people you know who work at it and you can see that through the LinkedIn. Maybe the game just had a huge DLC launch and everything is on fire and Twitter will tell you that.

In my first gaming job, I referenced that I was social media manager for my gaming guild. It was an extremely active community and I had been involved for several years, but being able to share that this is an area where I dedicate my free time demonstrated passion, dedication, and interest. Think about things you do in your free time if you don't have an applicable experience background.

One of the key ways that I get insight into an industry, company, or interviewer is through push notifications on key leading social media accounts. I try to keep an eye for accounts that a active posters and have keen insight that could allow me to either absorb that knowledge, or better, give me a starting point to research. Perhaps one of these accounts is discussing the latest controversy or struggle in the industry or a recent success. Being able to call that out and have your own insight is beneficial in any interview.

Admit you don't know much, but show eagerness to learn. Pay attention to what the interviewer says. Show interest by asking about the company. Focus on what you can do, not what you know about the company. Show your passion for gaming. Learn about the company after the interview. Send a thank-you email with what you learned.
