What do you do if you have multiple projects and need to prioritize security tasks?

Consider factors like presence of exploitable vulnerabilities and how it impacts financial losses, reputational damage, data breaches, system outages etc. Prioritize based on risk score ,its potential impact ,costs and severity of damage. Taking all these terms into consideration we can prioritize tasks.

Security tasks have and need to be always a priority under any circumstance. Developing a new IT project requires not only the capacity to be flexible, efficient, and cost-optimized but also needs to be developed in a healthy and secure environment.

The establishment of a repeatable, methodical risk analysis method that integrates the real threats with the controls required by the different standards, laws and good practices is the basis for planning. Based on this method, objective decisions can be made, based on real risks, which can be planned and accepted by the management as a framework for future work. One should not start by analysing the projects to be carried out, but rather the deficiencies to be solved, which will of course be grouped into projects, but never the other way around.

In my experience, and to prioritize multiple cybersecurity tasks is to take the time to do that comprehensive risk analysis first. Yes, determine the actual threat(s) to your data and assets. Remote code execution, privilege escalation, command & control, and any threat of exploitation of remote services that would allow lateral movement in your organization should be at the top of your list for threats. Conversely, reserve high-level decision-making tasks, such as incident response planning or security architecture design, for experienced cybersecurity professionals. For instance, delegate routine vulnerability scans to automated tools while reserving critical incident response planning for senior security analysts.

Task delegation is essential when managing multiple projects to prioritize security tasks effectively. Today's workloads are growing. More to do, less time to do it, and faster required SLA's. Without automation, you can throw bodies at it, but this functions only up to a point. Automation, as well as leveraging new tooling such as Artificial Intelligence, are a force multiplier for an experienced team. However, be wary of simply training your techs to push buttons on tools they don't understand. We still need to be able to function when the tool doesn't.

Also, be aware of and evaluate how much your company is investing in time, budget and resources in each project. There is a big difference between a major company initiative involving many parts of the organization and a project that may seem important and only impacts a small group inside or outside of your company. In the real world you need to take many factors into play. A risk assessment is where you start, and you can create a heat map to show which projects are the priority. Base the heat map on risk reduction and complexity. I use complexity to describe both time and resource requirements. For example you may have a project like network segmentation that could take years, lots of money and lots of people. But, if you focus on that one, you won't be able to work on others. You also need and should take advantage of quick wins. So, remember its not just about the risk the project reduces but the time and resources it takes. You might be able to do 5 other projects that move the needle more than just one large one.

It’s important to assess from an architectural standpoint the risk impact and mitigation, but it is the responsibility of the leadership team to accept, mitigate, or otherwise handle the risk. Unless you are specifically in that role, you can only make recommendations. Your leadership team will guide you on the priority of risk. If the risk is presented and not addressed, then the risk is still there; all you can do is document it, including who you talked to and the communication path.
