What do you do if a failure in your Environmental Services career becomes a valuable learning experience?

I would accept that sometimes mistakes happens even when you think you have done everything. The important thing is to have a plan how to response to the failure. Every failure must become a lesson learning opportunity in a workplace. Sometimes failures could result in health and safety or environmental adverse outcomes. So first step must be emergency response to the event. Afterwards the problem must be analyzed to find the reasons of the occurrence and to rectify the problem. So this is important to have a strategy for such situations.

This question answers itself! I would also use it to educate others. "Experience is a dear teacher, but a fool will learn no other way," as my Dad used to quote Mark Twain.

In environmental services, as in many other professional fields, it is necessary to transform setbacks or obstacles into steps toward growth. We often face adversity, but a failure is just an invitation to learn that must be taken advantage of. Setbacks are part of the professional journey, and we must accept them as opportunities for growth. As in any continuous improvement process, we plan, do, review, and act to adjust future actions. Failure is a possible outcome, so we must learn from experience. For example, was it a flawed strategy? Lack of communication? Unforeseen factors? The answers to these and other questions can provide us with valuable information. The analysis process should help us improve.

When things don't go as planned, it's key to take it in stride. Instead of beating yourself up, look at setbacks as learning moments. Break down what went wrong and find the lessons there. This way, you turn each bump in the road into a chance to get better and keep pushing forward. In the words of Thomas Edison "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

You learn from it and apply it to your overall management style.....Learn from all the ways it went wrong - How, why, where, when and what the Team did or what caused the failure. Apply that knowledge to future projects, apply to Training, and follow up with corrections and better reults

A root causes analysis must be conducted when a failure happens. Try to conduct brainstorming meetings with the environmental team to find and analyze the failure causes.Some Failures in environmental services could have various reasons. For example negligence in monitoring or operation of facilities according the instructions, faulty environmental impact assessment that can lead to miss some important issues, incorrect information and data used for impact assessment, technical failures of detection systems and etc. Document the findings for records and plan to do corrective and preventive actions.

Doing this is like a game replay where you get to see what went wrong. Instead of just feeling bad about it, you can figure out what needs changing or tweaking. This means you're not just moving past mistakes but learning from them, which seriously ramps up your skills. It's all about turning "oops" moments into "aha" ones, so you keep getting better at what you do.

Learning from failures and relevant causes lead towards having a progressive environmental management system. A combined health, safety and environmental risk register is a dynamic document that must be reviewed and updated continuously particularly after every incident, any changes including expansion in projects or new technologies and equipments. Corrective actions depends on the causes. It could be a thorough review and correction of impact assessment methodology, equuipments operator training, equipment maintenance or renewal, any updates in administrative guidelines and documentation and etc.

Your response to a failure must include a short term corrective action either to minimize the consequences of any incidents that probably happened because of the failure as well as a longterm precautions such as revising strategies and procedures, review and correct risk assessment procedures and relevant supportive tools, any changes in environment awareness and training matrix and etc.

Presenting these experiences and relevant lesson learning in regular meetings such as environmental health and safety committees, joint health and safety meetings and projects weekly meetings is an effective way in order to transfer environmental knowledge and findings to relevant authorities and decision makers. Environmental services failures could lead to serious health and safety outcomes for example a Flammable chemical leakage can be identified as an environmental contamination issue but It may cause a fire accident with catastrophic consequences. So it is important to share these findings with health and safety teams as well.

When you open up about where things went wrong and how you addressed them, you're essentially providing your colleagues with the knowledge to avoid similar setbacks. This approach not only spares them the trouble but also fosters a culture of transparency and continuous improvement within your team. By encouraging this open dialogue, you help build a stronger, more resilient workplace where everyone can learn from each other’s experiences and collectively navigate challenges more effectively.
