Encouraging psychological safety within teams fosters an environment where individuals feel comfortable admitting mistakes and sharing feedback without fear of judgment, thus enabling a culture of learning and continuous improvement; for instance, when a team member openly discusses a project failure, it provides an opportunity for the entire team to learn from the experience and adjust their approach for future endeavors.

I like Adam Grant's thinking on this if you're not failing at a certain rate, you're probably not stretching yourself enough. It’s not about wanting to fail, but recognizing that when you do, it’s a clear sign you’re g. growing. When failure uncovers my blind spots, I see it as a chance to get curious and dig deeper, not as a flaw to shy away from (but that took a while to get to :). This approach doesn't mean charging headfirst into failure but learning from it to refine my approach. It’s a mindset shift—seeing each failure not as a misstep but as a stepping stone to greater understanding and resilience. This perspective keeps the journey interesting and far from boring, turning potential setbacks into valuable lessons.

Seeking feedback can be one of the hardest things to do in your career. It's like watching a scary movie with your hands over your eyes, but you decide to peek anyway. No one likes to give bad feedback, but you as someone who wants to learn and grow need to insist on it. Tell them this won't hurt your feelings, and that you want constructive criticism because you want to accomplish x, y, z. In return, tell them you can do the same for them. Like you two have each others "career backs". My recommendation with this, is only pick 2-3 people to do this with.

Once we become aware of what we do not know, or of areas where we go wrong, it is time to ask for feedback from our superiors, peers, and even juniors. The main foucs here is to gather as much information about ourselves and our actions as possible from as many different directions and sources as possible. Having a 360 feedback helps us understand what and where we are doing/going wrong and it leads us to designing a more reliable, relatable and actionable plan for course correction.

Consider expanding your loop. Include people outside your immediate network or even external stakeholders. This offers fresh perspectives. People outside our circle might identify what we and our colleagues missed. It can also lead to honest feedback. Those with less hierarchy might feel more comfortable being candid, especially if anonymity is offered.

TIP - Shift the focus from your intentions to the impact of your actions. While it's natural to defend your actions by citing good intentions, true leadership and personal growth come from taking ownership of the effects your behavior has on others. Acknowledge the impact, whether intended or not, and use it as a foundation for improvement. This perspective fosters accountability and emphasizes the importance of understanding how your actions are received, enabling more meaningful and constructive changes in your behavior and interactions.

After receiving constructive feedback (emphasis on constructive), it's important to pivot toward personal growth and self-awareness. This refines your long-term leadership capabilities. Improvements born from feedback will naturally spill over and improve your team/colleague dynamics. By embracing feedback as an opportunity for growth, leaders (and non-leaders) can develop a positive attitude about feedback. Done well, you improve while building resiliency.

Successful leadership often emerges when people are conscious of crucial personal experiences in their life, grasp the driving forces, recalibrate their actions, and redesign themselves. Stanford considers the soft skills of self-awareness, IQ, and technical abilities to be managerial competencies that predict effectiveness and leadership success. It suggests that IQ and technical skills are less crucial to leadership success than self-awareness. Due to the unprecedented business challenges today, leaders must have an inner compass of self-awareness to walk the tightrope of leadership.

Taking time to digest and reflect deeply is essential after receiving feedback. It's important to engage not only the brain but also your feelings in this process. Reflect on how your actions, decisions, and leadership style may have contributed to the failure and exposed your blind spots. Consider your core values and personal biases, and how they align with your professional goals. This introspection helps to understand the root causes of your blind spots and can lead to meaningful personal growth and becoming a more self-aware leader. It's not just about fixing a problem; it's about embracing personal development and continuous improvement.

Even if we wish to change, the people around us will not allow us. They would keep pulling us back. But we need to have strong resilience, Hyper-Focus towards goals & consistent practice. This will help us to have any change. Both internally and externally.

Tolerating “good enough” You can only be fully self aware with feedback from others so make sure you ask for it or have a coach interview people for you.
