What do you do if you encounter difficult students during your teaching internships?

"Difficult students". Even the phrase makes my stomach muscles tighten. They're not difficult. We've made life difficult for them. All behaviour is communication, and without realising this, we'll never reach those kids we're labelling negatively. When we label children as "difficult", we demonise them. When we do that, we dehumanise them. When we do that, we've lost them, for ever. And it's not their fault. The first thing to do is reframe the narrative, and rephrase that awful label "difficult students".

Every person is unique, and if you encounter a difficult student try to talk to him/her patiently and understand the reason for that behavior. There has indeed been a drastic shift in the behavior of students in last 20 years, and one major reason I feel is unlimited access to information and facts through internet that has distracted them a lot. Talk to them in private so that they can discuss there issues, if any. Try modify your teaching method if required. Be patient in the class, and I strongly believe that even most difficult student will grafually respond soberly if you keep your patience.

I always try to remember that my students may be kids, but they're people, too. People with less life experience and less ability to understand and express their emotions healthfully. They deserve respect and understanding like anyone else, but they also need help navigating their emotions. What we may perceive as "difficult" is more likely a need for help processing and managing big emotions. Be someone they can trust by helping them navigate those big emotions.

When working with challenging students during an internship, it's essential to establish connections, communicate expectations, use positive reinforcement, use effective classroom management strategies, encourage open communication, resolve conflicts quickly, seek mentorship, reflect on experiences, and adjust strategies accordingly. Using these methods, one may hone crucial abilities in leading a classroom and engaging students.

Every teacher might encounter various kind of difficult student during their teaching journey. The students are not always difficult....they just think or act differently. As a teacher we should try to build healthy and trustworthy relationship with them. Should try to appreciate them rather than avoiding. They just need proper guidance, opportunity and motivation. Our role is to facilitate them with all these.

In my experience I’ve found that students respected me as their professor if I showed them respect and dignity before I knew anything about them. I think it’s a mindset about learning from one another that enhanced our relationship. Students showed eagerness to learn when they realized I was open to listening.

Assess the underlying issue: Try to understand the root cause of the student's difficulties. Are they struggling with the subject matter, lacking motivation, or facing personal problems. 3. Establish open communication: Encourage open and honest communication with the student. Create a safe and non-judgmental environment. 4. Collaborate with colleagues: Seek advice from experienced colleagues or supervisors. 5. Set clear expectations and boundaries: Clearly communicate your expectations regarding behavior, deadlines, and performance.

Take the time to connect personally, showing interest in their lives and being available to listen. This builds trust and respect, making it easier to address challenges together. By nurturing positive teacher-student relationships, you create a supportive environment where students feel valued and understood.

I can build relationship with the students who are not concentrating & make my communication skills work on them. Making them understand the importance of education

I agree that clear expectations begins with the first day of class. Taking the time to review the syllabus was always a priority. Questions were welcome for clarification. Because the University where I taught had an attendance rule regarding number of absences I made sure students understood how that applied to our once a week class schedule. I found it best to address those issues on the first day of class. I also addressed emergency situations and how I handled them.

Difficult students are always going to be present in your classroom. Not everyone enjoys your subject or topic. Try to understand the underlying reasons, I frequently find that it is simply a lack of understanding or the initial approach of delivery has not been effective for that student. This is OK. We learn differently. Be creative, approach the topic in a different way, can it be made more relevant to the student so they can directly see how this impacts them or their aspirations. Build positive relationship and rapport with the student this will help you identify effective approaches that work for them. This helps create a more individualised or holistic approach to learning.

As an instructor, positive reinforcement works like a charm. Not only does it motivate other students, but you are able to engineer behaviors in a group by strategically encouraging specific things.

So many students are classed as difficult when they are really so talented and just learn differently. But...there are also moments when you might face something like aggression and as a purely pragmatic approach, I'd personally say never shout as this indicates you've lost control and that's a dangerous place to be. Don't be combative or confrontational, stay calm, and try to remove the conversation away from other students, as it then removes a lot of the pride and bravado factor.

I already faced difficult students during my teaching but I always tried to root cause of the behavior of those students then I slowly slowly understood why they were behaving like this after it I applied positive strategies to tackle and reform them by friendly talking and motivate and encourage them by giving some example

There are no difficult students only the difficult situations in teaching... When facing challenges in teaching, stay calm, assess the situation objectively, and seek support from colleagues or mentors. Maintain open communication with students and parents, prioritizing self-care and well-being. Remember, difficulties are opportunities for growth, and with resilience and determination, you can overcome them successfully.

There is no shame in seeking support and guidance from your colleagues who are in the school for a long time and know very well about students. They are experienced and skilled. As a young educator, you will always have new techniques, skills and knowledge to learn from senior or mentor teachers. Grab this opportunity of learning while being in the practice teaching.

Difficult children can be tackled using a customised lesson plan.A classroom is a spectrum of children with endless possibilities and varient strategies. In order to cater to the difficult children a teacher can apply various possibilities given below: 1. More TPR in practice 2. Active involvement in team building 3. Assigning the task of checking on others 4. Customising the lesson plan with differential activities 5. Experiential learning strategies 6. Praise and reward system Incase of proximal difficulties the student should be subject to a continuous counselling session with the help of a trained counsellor.

Handling difficult or challenging pupil is a task, as it actually disrupts the entire planning. So very important thing is patience and positive attitude towards these kind of kids, maximum involvement in the class, try to engage them somewhere with positive learning outcome.sometimes being strict also helps to handle such situations and kids.

As a teacher, you must encounter a difficult student once in a while, so here's what to do. Call the student out separately, give him/her words of reinforcement, using already solved case which turned successful, as an example. After that, become friends with him/her and set out more tasks for him/her to achieve while in school. Don't forget to always engage him/her in every class discussions!

“Everyone is allowed to have a bad day”, is just one of the phrases I have been found to use with my students. There is a combination of the above mentioned key points needed when we are working with our students. Should a student be having a “challenging day”, for whatever the reason, giving time and space for a few minutes allows them to utilize coping strategies to regulate as well as a means of non verbal communication. As educators, we need to remember our students all need something- we are no longer just educators. We need to meet them where they are and for some is their basic needs- showing you care! Once those baseline needs are met, learning can begin. Thank you for being an educator!

"Difficult" is rather undefined. One may find it difficult to give a general answer. If it pertains to behavioural issues such as disturbing other learners in following the lessons then one needs to act in the interest of the general good. It is up to the psychological skills of the teacher then how, in each individual case, he/she would react to assist that student in becoming an appreciated member of the learner group (again). If necessary, a teacher needs to seek support by trained specialists.
