What do you do if employees are constantly clashing and causing conflicts?

The critical first step is to understand the conflict which requires empathetic non-judgmental listening to all parties. Being heard and understood is an important step. Then identify the causes of the conflict and encourage the parties to work together to find solutions.

As leaders, facilitating dialogue can help to resolve the conflict. That includes listening and understanding both parties, and allowing each to speak openly and without judgment or interruption. The parties can then understand each other and we can begin a search for a facilitated cooperative resolution.

Si los empleados se enfrentan y crean conflictos es el momento de facilitar diálogo entre ellos participando también tú activamente. Habría que analizar la situación concreta, aunque los pasos genéricos que se pueden dar son: 1.- Hablar individualmente con cada uno de ellos para intentar entender 2.- Preguntar la opinión a otras personas que profesionalmente se relacionen con ellos para verlo desde otro ángulo 3.- Reunirte a la vez con las personas en conflicto y conseguir compromiso de mejora, junto con un plan de acción 4.- Seguimiento individual y conjunto del plan de acción.

La forma más común en que surgen los conflictos es no gestionar adecuadamente una emoción vinculada a una interacción en el ambiente laboral. Con el tiempo, esta emoción no gestionada se enquista, y da lugar a sentimientos negativos como envidias, resentimientos, etc. Para poder gestionar bien una cadena de emociones hay que identificarla y reconocerla. El mejor remedio es la inteligencia emocional. Con dos o tres sesiones cortas de formación, se puede dar al personal las bases de cómo reconocer un secuestro emocional, y cómo gestionar la frustración. Algo tan simple puede reducir en gran medida los conflictos. En mi opinión, los managers deben tener conocimientos sobre resolución de conflictos, y capacidades de comunicación.

Teach effective communication, active listening, and problem-solving. Use team-building activities to improve relationships and collaboration. Coach on conflict management strategies for mature handling of disagreements. Foster a culture of respect and understanding through mentorship to develop stronger interpersonal skills and create a harmonious work environment

I like to engage the parties to fashion their own solutions with my guidance and support. They likely have some common interests and together can arrive at a common ground which may work for both of them.

Una vez que nos hemos reunido con las personas que tienen conflictos y hemos obtenido compromisos de cambio es el momento de supervisar el progreso y ver si se está realizando lo que se ha acordado. Esta supervisión no será una sola vez, sino que habrá que fijar un tiempo en donde se realizará de manera sistemática. Modificar hábitos y costumbres no se hace porque se lleguen a acuerdos y se quiera que se cambie, sino con la repetición continuada en el tiempo. Por ello tenemos que asegurarnos de que este seguimiento se realiza de manera correcta.

Cuando llegamos a la situación de que los empleados se enfrentan constantemente y tienen conflictos es que no lo hemos sabido parar a tiempo. Ahora es complicado enfrentarse porque probablemente esté enquistado y haya que actuar amputando. La única forma sería reunir a quienes tienen estos conflictos explicarlos claramente e indicar que en ese contexto no vas a tener a las personas en tu empresa y ofrecer ayuda para revertir la situación. Eso sí, tienes que estar dispuesto a tomar medidas drásticas si no hay mejoras.

This can happen when the employee does not have respect for each another. And very likely they are making the schoolboy mistake of assuming everyone else thinks like they do. So I would do the following 3 things: 1 Make it clear that Respect is key to the company culture. Outline to each the things they achieved and why they should be respected. Things they did not achieve are off the table. 2 Have each of them write this down as a question to themselves (using an actual pen and paper) "Do you think everyone else thinks like you do" Then pose the question to themselves, silently. 3 Have each read this book: The Little Book of Stupidity by Sia Mohajer.

From an employment-law perspective, you need to make sure you are documenting, documenting, and documenting each incident contemporaneously. When I represented exclusively employees in employment matters, the only case I ever turned away was a case in which an employer kept good track of all of the performance issues and other incidents the employee had over the years. Confronted with the employee's thick personnel file, I told the employee that it was going to be an uphill battle to establish a retaliation or discrimination claim. Sometimes remedying the conflict isn't always going to be possible and you'll need to have the option to terminate. If you must terminate, make sure you have the paperwork to back up your decision.
