What do you do if emotions run high on a film set?

STAY CALM As a leader or member of the production team, it's essential to remain calm and composed, especially during tense situations. Listen attentively to the concerns and grievances of those involved. Give them an opportunity to express themselves fully without interruption. PROVIDE SUPPORT

First step(and the toughest one): Stay calm and composed in front of the larger crew. Not everyone needs to know what's going on in your head as a leader. Step two: Take your core team (EP, DP, AD/DA, Gaffer) aside. Express your concerns to them and ask for their support. (Most of them will support you if they truly want to make the film with you.) Last step: To reduce stress, step away from the set for 5 minutes. Use the washroom, look into the mirror, talk to yourself, calm down, and then return to the set. Most of the time, I manage to keep two roles on set: producer and director. Emotions run high a lot of the time, and the steps mentioned above have helped me keep going. Hope this helps. :)

You have to stay calm but most importantly, you have to listen. People want to be heard so often, when emotions run high, people are not feeling heard about whatever is going on. I had a big accident happen on set once. The crew were shaken, upset and wanted to blame production and find fault/. We held a calm meeting with the whole crew and I let them have the floor and voice concerns and I just listened to them. I made sure to create a safe and open space that was welcoming and tried to offer solutions for them. Being on side and listening is one of the best things one can do in that situation. Stay calm, use a calm tone and listen to what people are saying will diffuse a situation that can get out of hand very quickly.

Follow a set of steps. First, assess your own emotional state and make sure that you can self regulate, before facing any stressful situations. A grounded energy is quickly matched. Second, identify the immediate priority to the day (or the set up, the hour or the minute!) and pin point the main blocker standing against it. If that is a person or a team, address the issue with compassion, mirroring them to build trust and once there, follow with a reminder of the priority and shared goals. If the obstacle is a situation, identify the mini steps and the key people who can help you overcome it. And don't forget to maintain a sense of humour!

If it doesn't involve you directly, WITHDRAW! Stay out of it. If it does involve you, stand your ground without getting angry or emotional. But also remember, yours might not be the only correct opinion. Be open minded. And communicative without being combative. I've worked with actors who are masterful at conflict management. I've learned a lot from them!

Maintaining a fun, relaxed environment is the best setting for everyone on a film set. But what happens when the entire production is impacted by a tragic news event? We had just opened the doors to our shoot location and had 6 hours to finish our scene. Kobe Bryant's tragic accident was announced and we were all in shock. Everyone knew the time crunch we were under, but we could feel the weight of disbelief as people moved about. We stopped, gathered everyone, and addressed the tragedy. The 10 minutes we took to acknowledge our sadness allowed us to regroup and push forward and meet our deadline. It's important to remember that we are in the people business. Empathy and support are essential to work you can be proud of.

Support is one of the most valuable things in a high-tension situation. Sometimes, just sharing your grievances (in other words, ranting) can be therapeutic and lessen the tension. Additionally, what one person is expressing could be what others potentially feel, so it is worth listening and offering a space where they can share, as it could provide a better environment for the production moving forward.

Listening to people can be a great solution. We don't have to work under pressure on the set, because our mission is to convey this emotion on screen and not to transpose it with our crew partners, so dialog with listening can be a good way of showing affection and compassion.

Talk as freely as you can to your team. Try to understand what is going on on with members that are already showing signs of stress, you can always notice this kind of things, sometimes they are very apparent. Once you know the problem, just throw the truth on the table, with everyone involved present. If you can do this prior to any explosion at the set, you’ll avoid trouble.

One thing i have found most helpful is to ensure that all the parties feel heard, sometimes just listening with intent and offering an unbiased opinion can do the trick

Navigating emotions in a fast-paced creative environment can indeed be challenging, with numerous moving parts and unexpected hurdles along the way. While effective pre-production planning can set the stage for success, the reality of shoot days often involves unforeseen challenges. From my experience, I've learned that conflicts are inevitable, but how we handle them is what truly matters. When tensions arise, breaking down the conflict into manageable compartments can be an effective approach. By addressing each issue individually and getting to the core of the problem, we can find constructive solutions and move forward collaboratively.

I think it’s important to understand where each person is coming from and addressing the core issue. Also we have to remember that the main objective is to finish the film as seamlessly as possible. So we need to reach a compromise between the parties so that everyone can move on and work happily.

Effective mediation as a neutral party is key to resolving tension. In one instance, after mediation, the parties were each given some break to cool off and later in the evening I took both of them on a diner date with bills on me. It may sound weird but it worked and both parties reconciled after series of laugher and jokes and returned to shooting the next day as though nothing happened between them

If you was not abe to avoid a conflict, you need at least to know why it happened. If you already know why, you should have been able to avoid it, but you didn't. If you don't know what happened, stop everything for a while and talk to everyone involved, fast!

Boundaries are the secret to healthy relationships on and off set. One boundary I set with my crew is this "If you aren't the director, please don't give direction to the actor/subject." When working with actors, I make a pact with them inspired by Judith Weston's book "Directing Actors". I tell them they are safe to share anything they want with me and I promise to give feedback or notes in a safe place, instead of in front of the whole crew. If emotions run high on set over something said at lunch or between takes, I remind the crew to keep conversations professional or related to the film. If I need to deal with an issue, I always try to sidebar so people feel safe.

In this regard, as the overall on the project, you have to set limits and also a chain of communication. Everyone there must know who to complain to, who to answer to, who to seek information from and how to go about it. With proper rules being set, the heat is not likely to resurface

this depends on who's getting emotional. If it's a crew member, removed them from set for a short time to access, or permanently.

Keeping the crew focused on the final goal can have an intense effect on everybody. The word itself, focus, explain a state of mind where you can only see the job done, keeping other problems blurred. Showing professionalism, being strait forward with your ideas and resolving personal issues quickly and firmly will get you there.

Although follow ups can be sit down reflections, they can also be simple nods of acknowledgement throughout the day to represent your support and understanding of the individuals needs.

After a conflict, people involved will be sensitive for a long time, perhaps thought the rest of the shooting. If you had to calm them down, in front of everyone or in a privet conversation, it's only natural, logic and kind to follow up on that talk in a calmer moment. Be a friend.

Film sets can be places of great creativity, as well as, high anxiety. Long days and tight schedules can lead to a lot of emotions but you should always take a step back, breathe and remember that we are all on the same team. Instead of pushing back, you should assess the situation and find what you can do to right the ship.

Empathy is your most powerful tool. When tensions rise and tempers flare, take a moment to see the world through your colleagues' eyes. Understanding their pressures and stresses can transform a heated moment into one of collaboration and support. Empathy builds bridges and soothes spirits, making it easier to work through challenges together. Remember, a set that thrives on mutual respect and understanding is more likely to produce work that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. Let empathy be the guide that leads your team through tough times, making every production not just a film, but a testament to the power of human connection

At this point, if you are not already aware of all your peoples problems, then you really have a problem. Those must be solved in the first days. Listen to everyone, closely. Good ears will get you there. Good closure will restringe following conflicts.

Hurl nonsensical insults at anyone you see, smack hats off heads, and rage around like you’re a green muscle monster! After that, complain to all of Linkedin’s data aggregators so their AI you inadvertently helped build by answering “community questions” can console your fragile, bruised ego with saccharine sweet words.

Remember, there is an end to it! That’s the great thing about this type of work, there’s a beginning, a middle and and END. And if you don’t like that group of people you can choose not to work with them ever again!

We aren’t solving world problems on set, but are hopefully helping alleviate them in fun, creative ways that make our fellow man look at themselves and the world in which we all share in new, uplifting, insightful and hopefully empowering ways. Therefore, keep smiling, stay humble, offer a helping hand and remember, you get to play in the sandbox you helped build so enjoy the process in all its glory!
