Our research with nonprofit human services leaders has shown us that EI improves with the effective use of two skills: (1) empathy, i.e. the willingness to literally 'take on' the perspective and emotional experience of a colleague, and (2) the ability to accurately respond to our colleague's core motivations and needs. The key prerequisite for leveraging these skills is the trust of our colleagues. Why reveal our emotional state, core motivations, or essential needs to someone who makes us feel psychologically unsafe? Start by measuring your team's overall psychological safety, identify where it is lacking, and isolate root causes.

Development of Emotional Intelligence is critical for humans to work and live together. The field of work does not matter. What gets the work done is the ability to be self-aware, regulate emotions AND be other-aware in life. Relationships are based on those foundational items. Nonprofits have the unique opportunity to offer relational support to who they serve. It is imperative that nonprofit staff and leaders have solid relationships with each other. Their ability to show up with high EI determines their success at work as that is the work- people. Unfortunately, the tools for restorative leadership of each individual are not accessible in nonprofits beyond once in a while trainings. Restorative conflict resolution has to be the way.

Encourage leaders within the organization to model emotional intelligence behaviors and create a culture that values emotional awareness, open communication, and collaboration. Establish feedback mechanisms where team members can openly share their thoughts and feelings, address conflicts constructively, and provide support to one another.

Demonstrate bold leadership grounded in self awareness. Model vulnerability, honesty and care for each other. Make that a living value that teams measure their performance against - EI is about relationships. Not all conflict are HR related. Interpersonal relationships can be difficult if each individual has not done their work on themselves and continue to do so. The heart can transform the mind if we give it time and space. Restorative Transformational conversations work. Simple and profound. Humans complicate things.

Organize team-building activities and workshops that promote trust, respect, and understanding among team members, fostering a positive and cohesive team environment. Conduct regular check-ins to assess team dynamics, identify any emotional intelligence-related challenges, and provide support and resources as needed.

Make sure to conduct a preliminary questionnaire for employees to identify the main points to address. Then, focus on group programs tailored to 70-80% of employees and leave the remainder for personalized programs.
